£.com posted as SOLD on Sedo at $1000 US today.

Although there have probably been more single-letter IDN sales, this is certainly the most important sale as it confirms the value of IDN.

The Domain is probably bought by a UK firm :) and a good buy it is. So you the US keyboard probably won't need it!

And when the IDN is made more public (couple of years) the keyboards will be compatible.

However arbitrary this sale may seem the value of any product is determined by the maximumt amount any person would pay for it, this gives some firm precedent when selling IDN-names and hopefully motivates domainmarkets to accept IDN.

It's just one step but a step none-the-less.

try alt-shift-4 :)

The so-called IDN domains should be called "localized" instead of "international". These letters are not on every keyboard; other character sets need to be installed in order to type them. Even on Windows based systems, this is cumbersome.

Bramiozo, that shortcut didn't work.

In theory, not many american's will not use the £ sign anyway.

Its like the German and Spanish IDN's, you won't need to use a ä or ø or your keyboard will you?

They are language specific.

Then, if I don't need to use any of the above, nothing is confirmed about the alleged value of IDN domains.

Nothing is confirmed as of yet - the future will tell for IDN's.

You never know, £.com could turn out to be completley worthless.

Bücher.de - would you ever need to use the 'ü'? No-one in the states will be interested in Bücher.de. Just the Germans, living in Germany. (Obviously, Germans in the states may want to take a look, but the .de extension pretty much means its local).

IDN's more or less are local - there are many German sites using them that we have never heard of. There are many .de IDN's been sold and used, and its intended for the German market, not anywhere else.

When I said value, I strictly mean't the value for whoever has an interest in that name. The fact remains that the value is determined by the highest reasonable price anyone with an interest is willing to pay, that's not geographically determined but logical from a marketing perspective.

If I know that in europe names like that are popular then europe is my market, that doesn't mean anyone outside europe has the privilege to pay a dime for the same name just because in their country it is regarded as worthless.

I see it more as a global market.

£.com is exceptional because of the emotive issue of Britain possibly losing the £ in favour of the €, something that horrifies a certain section of the UK population ... "We will fight them on the beaches ........ etc".
Difficult to think of too many others that would be snapped up for such a price as yet.

The IDN is great for localisation. Look at the .SE sale recently.

(shameless plug - I am taking offers on my IDN's, look at my signuture.)

Many people have no idea what those accents and strokes over the regular letters mean. They might bid on domains thinking they are getting the real thing.

shameless.... some ppl will get scammed by that.

This is a scandel!

Not because so much because someone is deliberately trying to scam, but because this represents the extent of the imagination of so called domain professionals. IDN is massive project with far reaching implications for the whole of humanity, and this is the best the so called domain industry can come up with. Pathetic!

No doubt a lot of scammers are going to attempt to ruin this.. Just by looking at the eBay auction shows how easy it is to spoof a domain. Also spammers are going to pounce all over it by spoofing domain names once they become widely known.
