For all those who are starting out as a Domainer, here are some tips that you may follow, to buy some good domains for your initial flips:
1) Go for a .COM domain. They have high demand as compared to others, and sell well. As they say, ".COM is King", so it is!! It usually takes less time to flip a .COM than any other extension, especially when you are starting out!
2) Choose a domain that best describes the niche that you are targeting. For example,the name DNForum clearly signifies that this domain is related to a domain names(DN) Forum. A perfect example for this point!!
3) Try to keep the names as short as possible unless it is something that is used in day-to-day language. It is seen that 3-4 letter words usually sell at great prices!! Although you won't find any 3 or 4 letter letter word for hand-registration, you may try to register any meaningful short domain names.
4) Choose a domain name that is catchy and memorable.
5) The name should not be a typo or a mis-spelt name. This may lead to a loss of traffic. For example, Tumblr and Tumbler. The second one is a better name.
6) Do not use a combination of numbers and letters. I would suggest that you don't go for numbered names at all while you are starting out.
7) Do not use hyphens in between the name. Although some of the hyphenated names do well, I would suggest that you do not go for it initially. Once you have an experience in buying and selling, you may try numbered and hyphenated names.
8) If you are registering a domain to flip it, I would suggest that you buy it for one year. This way, you can study the market and the response that your domains are getting, and accordingly decide whether to renew it or drop it in the upcoming year.
9) Almost all the single word names are taken. Buying those would mean multiple thousands of dollars of investment. Therefore, you need to be creative to come up with your own names that are brandable. If you do so, it is possible to sell even a $7 hand-registered domain for high $XXX to low $XXXX.
10) The most important of all points: Avoid Trademark Infringement. If you register a domain that infringes on a trademark, you may land up in trouble. Therefore, it is always good to run a trademark check before you go on to buy domains.
