Wasn't octopus.com up for auction a few weeks ago? Does anyone know if that sold/for how much?

i wonder how it was in 1985. What was the "sales pitch" so to speak that got these companies to buy into the idea of the "internet" and to register their company names?

**I said sales pitch, even though I know the internet was nowhere near commercial back in 1985...I'm just having trouble finding the right word :)

There was no WWW until the early 1990s. Back then the 'Internet' meant E-mail mostly.

I was there....I remember those days. It was mostly the companies who had a business connection with computers that were registering domain names. I wasn't one of them but I was on the sidelines and like many others had an interest and was mostly playing around with trying to understand how computers worked.

The problem with me and most others like me was we all thought it was too good to be true that all we had to do was register a few names and wait till the interest exploded and get rich. There was a lot of talk about potential changes to the way websites would be named and laws that would or could be enacted that would keep individuals from owning or profiting from domain names without also having a website linked to them. With all the uncertainly of what was to happen and the expense of registering names back then it was easy to be very afraid of risking your money and time. By the time I was convinced domain names would be profitable most of the good generic ones were gone. Besides that I had this crazy idea that fuelcells would be the next big thing and I was spending all my time keeping up with their latest news and registering as many of them as I could. LOL...
