Tucows Sells 2,500 Domain Names

TORONTO, June 19 /CNW/ - Tucows Inc. (AMEX:TCX, TSX:TC) today announced: that it has sold approximately 2,500 domain names from its portfolio of domain names for US$3.0 million in a private transaction. Tucows may earn up to an additional US$1.2 million if certain performance criteria are met. Any additional payment will be payable in one year's time.

"This sale indicates some of the latent value of our domain name
portfolio," said Elliot Noss, President and CEO of Tucows Inc. "As I have
stated in the past, we will continue to be opportunistic with our domain name
assets. While, this transaction does contain revenue-generating assets, we
felt that the sale was appropriate. This transaction also provides us with an
opportunity to step back and evaluate some operating possibilities.
Accordingly, while we now believe our cash flow from operations for 2007 will
likely be at the top end of the US$10 million to US$12 million range, we do
not expect to be discussing any possible change in guidance until our next
conference call at the earliest."

BIG Time - if they are hoarding domains - which means godaddy does it and every other registrar does - game over

This is one of the biggest problems we all face. Register.com and Dotster.com also hoard domains. There are are others as well that I'm sure can be named.

What is the problem with hoarding domains? Less good names dropping because the registrars snap them up for themselves? I think this is sadly the future, why wouldn't they?

I remember reading that Tucows had a good portfolio of last name domains they were using for a free email service. They have bought portfolios too.

You mean besides the fact it is, as far as I know, "illegal" based on registrar agreements - and basically cuts the tops off any chance of finding a premium drop unless it's permitted by the registrar - sucks! So much for open markets - time to find a new hobby.

I think of it this way
They already know if it's not them SNAP get's the profits.
or they can hold it & sell it off themselves...

All domains going to a drop system isn't natural, it's a made up monopoly.
I'd feel more people would have a chance to get their domains back from a Registrar than Snap.

Yeah, Tucows had Scoreboard.com (parked without any nameservers after Tucows gained control!) and it is now controlled by:

Maybe Mr. Warga represents new owners?

It's not their job to hoard domains. It's their job to be a registrar. Ethics > profits.
