Namewinner got ISF.NET today. The winner bid $3,001. Hope these prices indicate an improving domain market. There are a lot of signs that's happening.

Might be one of those reasons:

- Someone wanted that name real badly.
- 2 bidders that outbid each other so both of them think it must be valuable.
- The name indeed might be more valuable than other 3 letter nets for whatever reason.
- A newbie in bidding ecstacy :D

Remember NW is only known amongst domainers basically, so no idea why skyrocket bids in NW should be a sign of an improving domain market - at least as far as the retail market is concerned.

Simple - because this was hardly an isolated incident. Two other .nets I am aware of got these bids at NW today:

MOC.NET $2678
SAG.NET $1578

Even junky letter .nets have been getting $300 bids. This was not happening just a few weeks ago. One auction wouldn't mean anything - but this is happening consistently now. That is a clear sign of a better market. I have had my best month ever, so I am personally seeing the increased interest from retail buyers too.

The stock market is begininng to shape up as well (including internet stocks/companies) so we could be coming out of the doldrums here slowly. We are due for a short pullback here in the stock market but it's looking like we are going to resume the nice rally we have been seeing pretty soon after that.

Yep, talking about near term. The markets go up and down every day, that's normal.

If my memory serves me right, there were quite A LOT when they dropped the price to $50. I bought some other names back then though.

The other obvious point I left out of my first post is that NW may be known primarily to domain resellers, but domain resellers do not pay such increasingly high prices unless they have a market or use for the names that allows them to recoup their investment.

Just about every major business magazine (including Business Week, Business 2.0 and Entrepreneur) has run a cover story in the past 2-3 months about the re-emergence of the internet as the fastest growing segment of the economy (by far). That's good for us :).

I wish I could sell domains at the insane prices they go for at NameWinner. If people are willing to pay that much, where can we find these people? :D

Namewinners.com has expired and may drop soon, grab it and start an auction site for your domains, saying the names are dropping. Could be the next big thing :D.

Hah ! :)

Thats the theory.
Wishful thinking.

Besides, part of the reseller game is SPECULATION - which means people might bid such prices because they think/believe/hope the name might resell for more, not because they KNOW.

I've sold a few nice 3-letter net's - including ext.net for $600 (to a respected member here) - and a few other 3-letter combos for $300-$400 to other resellers recently. So the prices have stayed solid for good 3 letter combos and quality acronyms in the reseller/domainer market. As for the retail market - the prices seem to be improved lately and heading up as Duke said. Hopefully it's not just a hiccup.

At the same time though... I've blown out about 20 3-letter .net's for only $40-$75 each - so as always, it's about the quality of the combination of letters.

As a side note in the reseller-to-reseller area... I've noticed the newbies are catching on faster - and they realize that domains like zqk.net are not very valuable - and they are no longer scooping up "just any" 3 letter combo you throw out there for sale.

The market is there and the market is buying - but like any other competitive field - you might have to work a little harder for it this week - than you did last week.

Agreed! It's not the number of letters that gives the domain its value, but rather the letters it contains.

As I said in another thread - this is the only place where domain prices have cratered (maybe from seeing so many $1 sales in the auction). In the real world prices appear to be rising and the buyers are coming back out of hiding. The moral of the story is if you want a decent price don't plan on getting it from another reseller. :)
