What's in a trillion? A look at the number in Bush's $3 trillion budget

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON - A person given $1 million a year to spend would need three million years to blow $3 trillion. The United States, a government of sizable financial appetite, can do it in one.

Three trillion dollars is about what the U.S. federal government will spend this year for domestic and defence programs and benefit entitlements like Social Security and Medicare, according to President George W. Bush's latest federal budget proposal Monday.

A trillion is a figure more commonly used when talking about outer space. A light year, the distance that light travels in a vacuum in a year, is about 9.6 trillion kilometres.

Written out, a trillion is a one followed by 12 zeros, or 1,000,000,000,000. That's a million times one million, or a thousand times one billion.

There are about 6.8 billion people in the world, meaning that every living person would get $441 if the U.S. government's budget was divided up. If the money was split among the 300 million Americans, everyone would take home $10,000.

Counting to three trillion at a rate of one number a second would take almost 95,000 years.

Looking at it another way, one would have to circumvent the globe 120 million times to travel 3 trillion miles - or 4.8 trillion kilometres. Similarly, that would be some 17,000 round trips to the sun. The universe, 15 billion years old at the outside, would need another 200 such lifetimes to reach three trillion years.

You are good with numbers. Too bad the U.S. is not good at keeping those numbers low.

The American way of creating money out of thin air is, well as easy to do as producing toilet paper.

First all they have to do is chop down a tree, make pulp out of it.

Then make big sheets of paper, divide those up into little sheets and spray a bunch of numbers on the little sheets, ( lately lots of numbers) cut them up and send them to the Federal reserve banks. That is money creation today.

Years ago their hands were tied and if they wanted more money to fund a project they had to have the money in stock backed by gold. That kept them from selling out our future.

That all changed with fractional currency. Now we don't even have that, our money is based on the value of faith.

What is the difference between your American greenbacks and tp?

The tp when it has been made is sent to the grocery store. The dollar is sent to banks to make loans to you. You are borrowing toilet paper really. Imagine if you had a license to spray numbers on toilet paper and have them for deposit.

The dollar is printed now in such big numbers and with no backing behind it the value has dropped over 40% since about one year ago.

Soon its value will be seen as for what it is, so much toilet paper, ( a lot more course of course).

My opinion.

To bring it back to a manageable size - there is approx $2 trillion traded in the currency market every day.

But what is funny is when America goes into a recession, the rest of the world does too.

.

in other words the budget is people's money so instead of everyone taking home 10K$, how about we say every American is in debt of 10K$ for the 3 trillion budget?
