Woke me up at 4:36 this morning - everything on the shelves were rattling - mirrors and windows were rattling - we haven't had one this significant for years - lasted about 20 seconds.
was centered near the IL/IN border in West Salem IL - I'm about 60 miles or so from there.

Wow, that's pretty big in the eastern US. I've been seeing an increase in earthquakes and an increase in "odd" earthquakes, this one definitely would be considered odd!

Gramma, go to the link and click "did you feel it" to report what kind of shaking you experienced.

Preliminary shakemaps: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/shakemap/global/shake/2008qza6/

Looks like the big shaking (as of now) was consolidated into a small area but the low shaking spread out far. That's the scary thing of quakes on the eastern half of the US, the shaking goes very far from the epicenter.

Hi Draggar - I did that before they even had the earthquake listed there.
Lots of windows broken in the area - it's still dark out so I haven't gone to survey our big warehouse buildings - (they're masonary) to see if there is any damage.
i though someone was trying to get in the house at first - the way the windows rattled - but then I realized what was happening.
Big News in these here parts ;)

Yeah, USGS lists the hazard just southwest of that area high (I think it's New Madrid?) but not that area. I'll have to check with friends in KC to see if they felt it, I wouldn't be surprised if they did but most probabaly slept though it unless their pets acted up.

Let me guess, all the animals in the area acted up?>

Here's an odd question - if you know someone in the police, ask them if there was an increase in violent crimes (even domestic abuse) over the past week or two.

MY BFF is a dispatcher for the police in the next county over - I'll ask her and let you know.

We had a 5.4 back in '68 - our piano walked across the floor during that one - my husband said he saw concrete roads roll. I was 13 then, but will never forget it.
Theyre reporting this is not from the New Madrid - it's from the Ozark Dome, which I had never heard of before this. I assumed New Madrid too

Thanx. And I'm glad to see your OK and damage isn't too severe (and that you're able to post rather easily). That was 4:36CST, correct? (About 1 hours ago from this post)

Yah . my clock said 4:36 AM - but they're reporting it as 4:37
My dog was shut in his box - he woke and barked - but hadn't acted strange before.
The cats always act weird.

Glad to hear you are ok Nancy! That is crazy news! Since I am only a state over (up), I do not even know of any earthquakes that have happened around here, so to hear about one in IL is pretty scary!

My friend, the dispatcher, said no increase in domestic violence, batteries, etc in the past couple weeks.
I just went outside and walked around - don't see any damage to my buildings - we've had a couple rumbles - aftershocks i guess.
Big big news on myfoxstl.com they have some gas main ruptures and highway overpass damage in st. louis. someone was saying there was an earthquake in NV at the same time... I haven't checked tht out - but that would be weird.
Wondering if our oversaturation of water in the ground (we've had floods) could have contributed to this event. ...
All in all - pretty exciting - heck of a way to get woken up :)

Magnitude 3.0 and around the same time- IMO just a coincidence
Interersting, aftershocks for both happened about the same time, too.

Check the timings:
http://www.seismicblog.com/SMF/index.php?board=4.0
(shameless plug, at least it's relevant ;))

Edit: A pair of 5.2 aftershocks from this morning's quake. That won't be uncommon over the next few days.

This is why I don't like eastern US earthquakes:

The quake was clearly felt in Chicago, which is about 230 miles away. And residents in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky also reported feeling it.

The last major quake to hit New Madrid (northern ALabama / southern Arkansas?) was felt in Boston, Mass.

Good news, though:

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

My friend, the dispatcher, said no increase in domestic violence, batteries, etc in the past couple weeks.

Thanx, it's something that some have been watching. Traditionally there is an increase in violence in an area directly affected by an earthquake (near the epicenter) a few weeks to just a few days before a quake. Plus a very large number of "lost pets" (that's only reported in the US, though).
