When a registrar registers a domain name and deletes it again within 5 days, the registrar gets a refund. Are there any registrars that offer this option to their customers? Many companies register names to test for traffic and delete them to get a refund when there is no traffic: is this possible for individuals as well?

You get the domain, if you don't want it within 5 days, you unlock and cancel it and call up and get a refund. However, the domain goes immeditely to pending delete status with the registry and takes 5 days for them to release it again if you wanted it back.

Manuel, I believe that if the name is cancelled within the 5 days, it's deleted immediately and does not go through pending-delete again. At least I've seen it happen with a few names. Actually I was monitoring a few names, they were grabbed by a dropcatcher, they then cancelled the names (I guess they were testing traffic) after a few days and I registered them... :p

It's never quite as easy as that.

Dotregister allowed this back in the day and it rocked, until they cut me off for deleting too many names :)

Guys, just remember that the 120-hour delete rule is only alloted to registrars
themselves. Registrars can opt to give the same or limited privilege to their
end-users or not at their discretion.
