FoodRecipe.co.uk

I am told by members the .co.uk extension is fairly valueless, and that the two words together are redundant, if this is the case why are there so many searches for this redundant combination?

If you could figure out how to make money from this domain, start doing it. The optimization would be easy, as there are only 57,000 competing sites on google and the term is searched for over a three million times a month. Good luck!

Please note that the phrase food recipe without the quotes gets a whopping 2,040,000 pages competing for top spot.

no, those sites are not competitors for that keyphrase. If you put the phrase into Google without quotes, you are merely bringing up every page which uses those words, regardless of how each one of those words occurs in the page.

"the food that Bill was eating was made to a great old fashioned recipe."

rather than "Great Food Recipe for Salmon Mousse"

If you are to develop the site then you are on the right track.
In that case TLD doesn't matter (well, some minor things like language, etc. do). Only natural type-in .com have advantage, all the rest are in equal position with regard to SE.
A bit heresy here: Its even better to separate the words by hyphen or subdomain or directory, etc.
If you can manage to come onto the first (three?) pages at Google you have the winner.

Yeah, but most people dont use quotes when searching, therefore these are all competing sites..

Right. But Google gives preference to those as if they were searched with quotes.
Try search with and without quotes. The first resulting pages are mostly identical.

That is correct. I'm a search engine promoter by trade with 4 years experience and nearly no-one searches with quotes except the more experianced which is not many.

I am also an SEO consultant by trade.
The lowdown is that the ONLY way you can check the number of competing sites is by using quotes.

The reason for this is simply that all engines put sites at the TOP of the results which include the exact phrase. ALL the other sites come underneath. Let me say that again :

**ALL** THE OTHER SITES COME UNDERNEATH.

So, again : The only way to see the number of sites using that exact phrase is by checking the phrase inside quotes. Those are your competitors.

Simple, really.

I think someone should say that again in another way.
