true

Folks, today is the 8th anniversary of our entry into Afghanistan.

This was just my way of remembering those fallen, military and civilians.

That's an 8 that got so drunk it passed out.

I've had a few friends serve in Iraq and Afghanistan. Neither are a pretty picture for our troops.

My nephew (US Army Spec) is in Iraq now - first deployment there. He had just gotten back from Honduras (Yup, we had US Army deployed to Honduras when it appeared Columbia and Venezula were gearing up for a showdown on the border).

My brother-in-law (US Army Colonel) is in Iraq now - his 8th deployment to Iraq in this campaign. He has has been to Afghanistan twice. He was in the first Gulf war (Kuwait) as well.

He was going to stay in but decided that being a General had no benefits to it beyond what he could get now. With time in rank and service, his retirement pay would match that of a Brigadier General. Eighteen months (according to my sister) from now he will have the time to match.

Every soldier I have spoken with (active and veterans) all agree that we lost the mission when troops were pulled out of Afghanistan and deployed to Iraq 8 years ago.

My oldest brother (retired Air Force Pilot) was reactivated during the first Gulf mission. He flew into Kuwait numerous times ferrying troops and equipment back and forth from Pope AFB and Dover AFB. He declined their offers to come back in 2001.

My other brother (US Marshall) escorted numerous prisoners countless times from the Middle East and Europe to the now infamous Gitmo.

My other brother-in-law (Navy Seal) served the 1st Gulf War but also declined to re-enter.

My family (and myself) have served this nation honorably since the 1950's (father - Korean War Vet) and have fought in every major conflict since then. The notable (Vietnam) and the not so famous (Grenada, Haiti, Panama) and nearly every other deployment involving US troops.

We are all proud of our accomplishments and to have served this nation.

We have served honorably.

Even when our commander-in-chiefs were less than honorable.

I heard that this evening when I was on the road.

I also heard today that the Taliban now controls 80% of Afghanistan either in a military or community influence capacity.

I have a feeling all of this is weighing much into the decision making process.

This should have been done in 2003. All the billions wasted in Iraq would have been better used in Afghanistan. Not to mention the thousands of lives lost on the American side or the multitudes of Iraqi citizens killed. Over what? Some non-existent wmd.

Oh but wait, what do I know, I'm just a Liberal.....

Bravo. Someone who gets it.

Then again, most military people do.

I am in my first tour in Afghanistan. I'm home on emergency leave. I can say we never should have left. The Taliban strength and foot hole in that country has increased dramatically- this being front line intel being amongst the people.

Sorry to hear about emergency leave. Hope all is well.

It was a war against terrorism that could have easily been won 4-6 years ago.

The Russians waged a 9 year war in Afghanistan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_war_in_Afghanistan

AT the time Osama bin Shit was our friend and a proxy. CIA supplied Osama with millions of $$ and fancy shoulder missiles.

Years later he used those missiles to shot down American planes.
When are we going to learn to pick friends?
