A domain that I wanted was on auction at NetSol / NameJet (other threads). It is a low-quality domain (face value, 8 letter hyphenated domain) but is popular in one of my niches. I got the domain, the .org is already registered.
Of course, I was stupid enough NOT to check the non-hyphenated version (not as popular in the niche) but when it was recommended to me by someone here to get the non-hyphenated .org I checked for the .com - it was registered the day after I got the hyphenated one. Yes, I registered the .org of the non-hyphenated version.
Lesson learned, always check availability of variations of these domains, even if they seem obscure. The .com is now parked with horrible ads.
