Hi guys,

If any of you out there is planning to start a company in the domain industry, I recommend starting a company that checks if the domains are stolen.

The function of this company is to call up the owner at the WHOIS, and perhaps call up the previous owner of the domain and verify its not stolen.

With so many stolen domains these days, I believe this sort of company can make big money!!! You can even charge like $50 per domain check.
and I am sure many people who do x,xxx to xxx,xxx transactions will use this service to avoid being scammed!

So can somebody here please start a company like this ?
Thank you
Aaron

Hm... It sounds like a good idea, but $50 may be not enough for many of us to cover all the time, including multiple phone calls, internet research and etc. to provide a good comprehensive report...

Could be tied into an escrow service to make more $s.

(I still have StolenDN.com - StolenDNS.com - StolenDomainRegister.com for JV or outright sale....)

then maybe that company could charge like $100 or whatever amount necessary.

I am sure people would rather pay $100 than to risk loosing XXX,XXX to a scammer.

If an Escrow company would to provide this, it should be a separate entity on its own.

Its better to do the homework first, then proceed on to buy later. rather than being stuck in the middle of an Escrow realizing that is stolen.

I like the idea, but I think it would be hard to provide a paid-for service doing this, as you wouldn't always be able to say with a certainty that the name had or hadn't been stolen- what if nobody from the whois responds etc? Would the company acept liabilty if the name was founbd to be stolen, when they reported it wasn't etc?

It would be great though if one of the super-sleuth's here could write a short article detailing the ways that buyers can check a name's history themselves though... I use domaintools to check the past of high value names, but I am sure there is more that could be done...

Agreed - when I said 'tied to', I meant that both services would be complimentary to each other.

How can you 'certify' that the name is not stolen?

What would happen if the name is stolen '5 minutes after the verification'?

You would verify a name you want to buy assuming that you are already in negotiation with the seller.... if the name is stolen after verification then obviously are bound to find out:)

Also, the provider of this service will not be able to certify that the name is not stolen, so the buyer of this service will only use it for extra peace of the mind, but without any guarantees. I would use them anyway... I assume that they would know how to do a better job than me researching a name

I believe Rockefeller already has such a service, of sorts for free.
EscrowDNS.com I spoke to him on the phone and think he's a credit to the profession.

Title insurance is a tricky business.
It involves sworn statetements, legal filings, judges rulings, involvement of the multibillion re-insurance industry... a can of worms.
Good luck!

I do this with every name I buy on the aftermarket....a detailed investigation.

I will tell you that it would not be worth my time for $50...That being said, some sort of domain title insurance will be common place at somepoint IMO....at least with big purchases.
