anyone know what these are?

I just stumbled on one, and didnt know they existed.
so other than co.uk, net.co.uk, org.uk, there is ac.uk?
what is it supposed to stand for?

This is the full list of .uk extensions.

For investment I wouldn't bother registering anything other than .co.uk or .org.uk :)

You can't register .ac.uk.
There are for univesities and colleges only.

EDIT: I eventually decided to stay at www.hku.hk though. :)

1. No.
2. Depends on the domain. At a certain level of "quality" they're worth more than regfee :)
