How much more difficult is it for a brand new domain name to get traffic, then one that is a few years old? Say, the old one has just been parked and never developed.

Brand new = probably non-generic. Therefore, traffic is a matter of traction created by content. Aged domains tend to be more generic therefore retain traffic easier when developed, even if they were parked.

Like fine wines, aged domains hold more attraction as outlined by Acro. Most hand-regges today are 'corked' before they even get to propogate. The exception to this rule is where you might be able to scan news stories for new generic opportunities. It's an ever-evolving world and tomorrow's generics of course haven't been registered yet.

If the domain has been parked (not developed) you are basically starting fresh with a new domain name, regardless of its registration date.
