IN my quest to appraise a domain I have received (as evidence) an Alexa ranking of 1,123,890. I 've read about Alexa and its toolbar, but has someone done a deeper inquiry on Alexa's ranking and what it means in practical terms. I am sure it's a cmperative tool like most popularity tools but has it received any acceptance?

Thank you wise and more experienced ones (or whoever can help me) :)

I second that. The only thing it can be good for is to see if a certain domain has traffic to it. Then you will get a ranking result. The ranking itself is a joke. BTW who is no.1 there? It should be hotmail.com if it's some what correct.

Alexa is quite good for order-of-magnitude comparisons.

For example, it's hard to say which of two domains, one with an Alexa rank of 1,500,000 and one with an Alexa rank of 1,000,000 would get more traffic - but in *most* cases a domain with an Alexa rank of 150,000 will clearly get more traffic.

I would say that a 10x multiple is the safest "gap" for predictions i.e...

a domain with Alexa rank 1,000 gets more traffic than
a domain with Alexa rank 10,000 which in turn gets more traffic than
a domain with Alexa rank 100,000
and so on...

I think they are pretty close. Hotmail has right now about 110 million customers. And most of these will visit the site at least once or twice a day to check their e-mail. Yahoo as a search engine is out. They are even paying Google millions every year to use their search engine on their site. Without a doubt, Google is the No.1 search engine today. However, I have no figure of how many e-mail users Yahoo has. Anyone knows?
