this guy must backorder 1000 domains per day. he has at least 10-15 registrars..is there any end in sight to this guy? impossible for the average domainer to compete when the guy is only paying a buck or so per domain.

Oh I know about all about him. Just venting. He makes it impossible to get any drops for reg fee these days. most of what i see him getting is mediocre at best, so i don't know about his claim of '300,000 premium domains'.

He is paying the same as you and I (within a few dimes) maybe even more. He just has a formula that seems to work for them. He does snag some kick### names. Got to hand it to him, he has a nice business set up.

When people do this and automate it, it gets under my skin. Similar to those people who would automate buying tickets from ticketmaster and screw everyone elses chances of getting tickets, and then charge 4X face value. At least ticketmaster stepped up and declared that accessing their system through automated means was now illegal. Wish they'd do the same for domains.

You can also write letters by hand and buy stamps and mail them off - or send an SMS or email :)

i've read otherwise. isn't that one of the benefits of having your icann approved registrar?

Yes, but me automating how I contact a friend is not negatively impacting anyone else so I think it is apples and oranges. You just like to give me a hard time I think.

Cost of a domain is $7.52 That is what any and all registrars pay to Verisign ($.18 to Icann) for every .com registration. A benefit of being your own registrar is the ability to access the drop pool directly as they are dropped. Registrars compete with each other for grabbing those names. Enom has over 100 registrars specifically for this purpose. Setting up a registrar and paying it's annual fee (on top of registrations) can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars over just a few years.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

This guy is one of the top dogs when it comes to drop catching. Spend a few hundred $k on registrars and drop-catching software and you'll feel the same sting he feels. The only way to make things scale is to reg in bulk.

Thanks,
Luc

Ok, so I can't see him keeping this scale up forever then. He's got well over 2 million in renewal fees to keep all those. People like myself have to pay $70 plus if we want to get any names (without owning our own 10+ registrars) which kinda sucks.

Seems to have a pretty impressive list of domains. There are a lot of big players in this industry.

It's certainly difficult to compete with them, but that's why you gotta carve your own niche out.

Don't give up.

Exactly what Skinny said - find your own niche and capitalize on it, thats what i have done and its been good ever since.

Also: succes has to parts

1) Buying Names

2) Selling Names

We bought a few names from HugeDomains.com and always had a great experience dealing with them.

Lost a domain to this dude the other day. Was expecting no one to see value in this domain and that it would drop and become available. But that seems to never happen anymore.

I assume the way he evaluates what domains to purchase is automated. I wonder what kind of crap he gets doing that.

For sure he uses automated systems, you couldn't register that many domains without doing so. What's funny is that such a big player is using a hotmail address. This domain was 20+ characters, fairly low search volume, and would never interest an end user, so I really didn't think anyone would see value in it. Obviously I was wrong.
