Hmm ... I don't think any registrar has ever done that before (except our desperate downhill-going friend), and would or should ever do that in the future. More (including resellers) are going the loss leader route (e.g. charging something less than $6 for .com and .net). That makes more sense to me. Giving away a year free is too costly since you don't want to waste that with too small an account (with just a name or two) AND you don't want to waste that with too LARGE an account (with more than a thousand names) either.
