As a newbie, some time ago I bought a small number of .com.ng domains and later on asked about their value in these boards. None, obviously.

But I've just received an email from the registrar saying:

"2nd-level .ng domains will be opened for registration from Tuesday 16th April 2013. 2nd-level .ng domain names are domains registered directly under .ng. Existing examples are: bi.ng, google.ng If you are interested, kindly take a minute to fill out this form and we would be in touch. If you have done so already, you don't have to repeat the step."

So - assuming .com.ng domains are worthless, what about domains that form words in themselves, like:

weddi.ng
ki.ng
betti.ng
gami.ng
gambli.ng

etc.? Might they be worth getting if available? Or 2 or 3 letter domains at random?

Any opinions gratefully received :)

i'm sure some .ng hacks will appeal to a limited group

depending on reg/renew cost and/or restrictions if any, along with ease of registrar2registrar transfers, if allowed.

until you are sure... don't buy them.

When in doubt go without.... you can waste a lot of cash chasing creative ideas in this business. :frusty: make sure.

I would vote no without seeing major demand.

check out or wait to see if there has been any sales first. :yo:

the "market" is hack-lovers, the extension is irrelevant to that market, if it is marketable.

i was just describing how the frenzie starts when saying "if you wait, then you miss out"

cuz all it takes is one to say "i regged this and sold it for that"

didn't say i was going to reg any

Selling domain hacks isn't a sure thing, personally I'm not comfortable with a business model that depends on sheer luck.
Then, some TLDs do not permit speculative registrations (for resale). Sometimes, it's difficult or downright impossible to transfer a domain to another party (eg. .ps).
So you need to be certain you will be able to hand the domain over to somebody else with a minimum of fuss *if* a buyer is found.
Otherwise you are taking a gamble with your money. I think there are enough opportunities around, no need to take unreasonable risks. Good luck :)

I asked about ease of transfer out after purchase via their online chat system and got quite a garbled message that I didn't really understand.

However, they said the price was N15,000 which is about 60GBP which is a bit rich for my blood either way.

At almost $100 /year for a TLD that belongs to a country with a corrupt government and HQ of 419 rackets?

The answer is obvious.

Point taken, but a corrupt government (show me one that isn't), and a tiny % of the population engaged in 419s wouldn't make me turn a good deal down. If I could get one.

I'm not against domain hacks in general, but as I explained, the particular country makes such investments very risky. Just like Libya and .ly

Possibly, but I'm not seeing a dictator toppled and a civil war in Nigeria any time soon. They've been relatively democratically stable there for quite some time (which may not be relevant of course). Either way, I didn't want to take the risk in the end for a different reason tbh - I just don't know enough about domaining! I think I stand to lose a lot at $100/year as an inexperienced chap with this stuff. I didn't buy any.

It's quite an interesting feeling though, looking through what's available and really WANTING to buy some, even though the 'rational' bit of my brain knew they were probably worthless as investments. I'm not sure I'm mentally strong enough for this game!

Sorry to bump a 2 month old thread, but thought it would be worthwhile to share my experience with .ng. I actually did register two for personal friends whose names end in 'ng'. Note there is currently a three-char minimum, shorter 'premium' will be auctioned later.

The technical underpinnings seem sound, but the registration process is a bit unnerving. There is a good 2-3 day waiting period for their paper process to complete, the entire time during which you are saying to yourself "Did I seriously just send $200 to Nigeria? After all those years of emails I actually fell for one?". Fortunately after 3 days their DNS servers updated appropriated, and it seems my money did not go into space. I wouldn't get these for investment though - to many risk factors. It's great for my friends to have custom URL shorteners that may stop working someday, but I wouldn't build a business on an .ng domain, which means I wouldn't spend much more that the initial reg price on one.
