We know you value your privacy. So we wanted to let you know we've made a required change to our privacy policy.

The change is in compliance with an effort by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the global organization that governs domain registrars.

To protect consumers from losing their domain names if the registrar goes defunct or loses its accreditation, ICANN now requires all registrars to store a copy of their registrations with an outside data storage firm. This protects you by ensuring that there will always be a valid record of your domain ownership.

The storage provider we've chosen is legally obligated to safeguard these files. Your name and other personal information will continue to be protected, but now with an added layer of security.

At first glance, the message looks suspicious, even if the registrar fails, the data is still stored with the registry.

ICANN decision on terminated registrars
http://www.icann.org/announcements/terminated-registrar-procedure-27apr07.htm
ICANN makes deal with Iron Mountain for backup data storage
http://www.icann.org/announcements/announcement-2-09nov07.htm

Now you can see that the folks at ICANN had enough intelligence to setup ICANN as the deciding authority for that backup resource. The data is automatically turned over to ICANN in the even of a registrar failure or termination. I can't even imagine what would happen if one of those third party companies had someone disreputable on staff.

icann is moving to implement data escrow for .com/.net. Similar arrangements are already in place for other TLDs.
