My doctor said my bad cholesterol was ok, but I had low good cholesterol and it's past on from family. He also said that no diet would help it, but stop smoking would and being more active. He is giving me niaspan it's niacin B-3 time released, and one 325 mg of aspirin a day for it.

The niaspan cost $87 for 30 of them, anyway the doctor said with my age I had to get the good cholesterol up. I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem, or knows some one with it, this is the first I ever heard of this happening. Anyway my cholesterol was high before, and I changed my diet to get it down and then this happens.

I don't have this problem, but I can tell you that "good fats" will help raise you're HDL (good cholesterol). I would at least supplement with some kind of Fish oil product. The one that is sold at Costco is actually of very high in quality and pretty cheap.

A product I take, that most people don't know about yet is called SesaThin from Avant Labs. It's sort of a super Fish oil and is a byproduct of Sesame seeds. Stuff is not cheep, but has had some amazing reviews and results from those that have taken it. This will drastically help with the good fats.

Here is the link here.

Smoking, to the best of my knowlege:

1. Hinders your body from being able to produce good HDL, resulting in a bad or dangerous LDL/HDL ratio

2. Is considered to be the #1 risk factor for heart failure or trouble

Niacin, to the best of my knowlege:

1. Is a basic B vitamin you can buy anywhere very cheaply
2. Occurs as niacin or niacinimide at least
3. Comes in a form that doesn't cause "flushes" or heat flashes, and one or more that do
4. Requires or it is recommended that you first consult a doctor to make sure it is safe for your liver for you to be consuming it to treat this problem; in this case looks like you've got that covered
5. Actually works

And now, the really big finish:

There are products derived from red rice yeast that reportedly can lead to dramatic improvement in cholesterol, which may include some you may find by googling the following words:

1. Cholestene
2. Cholestin
3. Cholestine

Someone I have known for many years reported big results, and when I can track down the exact product she takes I will post it for you.

But Tas, in all candor, you really have to quit the smoking if you're serious, and one should never fall into the trap of thinking one can "make up" for it on the side with things like the above or other treatments.

I agree I need to stop smoking, the doctor wrote me a script for the niaspan it's need to get it. Medicare part D did pay for it, I started taking it and 325 mg of aspirin 30 mins before taking it. The doctor said the aspirin serves to help the flushes, and also help protect the heart. One thing I've been reading about is, that the niaspan even help if you have a heart attack. I'll most likely will stop smoking this spring, when I can hopefully get out and get my mind off of it.
