Just curious if anyone here is into VB, C++ or any of the other programming languages?? I started learning VB a few years ago and ended up dropping it with little knowledge of it. I could only do simple commands and learned a few timer codes but nothing major.

But now I have decided to pick it up again and very excited about it. I used to tinker with VB and create small animated greeting cards. I want to learn how to make games and other simple things to begin with. To me it seems really hard to learn it but I am determined this time. I have found several sites that have great tutorials and how tos.

Anyways was just curious if anyone else out their programs and what do you use your knowledge for?

what do you use VB for? To create software and applications, or what?

Yup been coding in VB6 for most of my developing life. Switched to .net last year though. I use SQL Server 2005 as a backend mostly.
Been using asp.net for webapps, though switching to php gradually now.
Most of the s/w i code are business applications. I do have knowledge of C,C++ but never really used it commercially.

Thats awesome. As I said I have to learn the basics again before I can make anything really but I want to be able to make simple games and try to move onto software. I enjoy learning and I'm really looking forward to taking it back up.

Did either of you find it hard to learn and how did you go about learning?

School
Friends
Self Taught

I am working on teaching myself by reading tutorials and plan on purchasing a couple VB books.

Friends and self taught. I took other documents with macros and played with them. I also look up codes online and try to edit them to suit my needs.

I also have a few books - not easy for me to learn that way.

I always do the same thing try to find sources to learn from. I also found a site that gives has a glossary for every VB term that you would ever need. It often helps to understand what your reading.

I know some C# but I mainly do Java. Python I had to learn in Uni, mainly because of a couple assignments we were given, I realized with python, it's sometimes faster than C at handling lots of numbers.
Besides that I'm a hardcore Php fanatic.

Mel, what do you plan to do once you've got a firm grip around VB? (no pun intended) *smirk*

I like it.

I figured I should try to find as many useful sites as possible. I have found freebie sites that allow you to use their sources to learn from, as well as walk throughs on how to create buttons and interfaces and all kinds of the simple stuff.
