TM problems. The olympic comittee aggressively pursues trademark infringements.

I'm afraid you can kiss that reg fee goodbye. As Bob noted the IOC has a strong trademark on the word Olympics and they go after just about everyone who tries to use it in a domain name.

The trademark applies to the plural as well as anything even similar to the word Olympic:

"The statute makes actionable any use of the word "Olympic" or similar terms "tending to cause confusion or mistake, to deceive, or to falsely suggest a connection with the Corporation or any Olympic, Paralympic, or Pan American Games activity."

If you called your site Chevrolets.com, you think Chevrolet couldn't do anything about it?

You also cannot put any Olympic content on the site without violating their trademark, so what good would the name do anyone?

The point is, only the Olympic committee owns the rights to allow Olympic material on such a site, so if someone tries to put that site online, the Olympic committee will just file an action and take it from them as they have with other sites over the years.

Couldn't tell you. Write them and ask :)

You can find out more about this issue by posting in the Legal Forum where a couple of excellent internet attornies can advise you. Maybe they can help you find a use for the domain that will keep you out of trouble.

you wouldn't actually need to put any olympic trademarked content on the site to make it useful...it is a .tv domain. It could contain schedules, information and results without ever touching olympic trademarks

It *already* touches Olympic trademarks by having the word olympics in it.

The mere act of owning it is cybersquatting.

To claim that you could put up a site about Olympics schedules without violating the trademark on Olympics is simply insane. It's like saying putting up a menu for things sold at McDonalds would make owning McDonaldsRestaurant.com OK.

The more you try to argue that you think it's OK to use this name, the worse of a legal hole you dig yourself into.

What is that supposed to mean? How could anything I say on this forum have any effect on my legal situation as far as this domain name is concerned? Are you trying to scare me? :)

Alright, fair question.

Disregarding any possible legal problems, I do no think there is much value in this domain name. .TV is not exactly a strong domain extension.

Some members here believe .tv will be big in the future. I think it has a change, but it will take awhile for .TV to be accepted. So, the question is, will .TV be widely accepted before the 2004 Olympics? I doubt it, which makes this domain virtually worthless.

However, if .TV does indeed catch on and a lot of television related websites start using .TV as their preferred domain name extension, then you might have something.

Good Luck.

Simple. When the Olympic committee investigates you for the purpose of filing a UDRP they'll find you here merrily discussing all the ways to violate their trademark, plus the fact that you were warned but ignored the warnings.

It's not a threat, just a simple explanation about how trademark infringement works.

If one was to compare world organisations to poisnous snakes, the olympic committee would be a spitting cobra.
It attacks anyone and anything that has the term olympic ( and variations)......BTW i would not worry too much... .TV is not taken too seriouslt in the domain world.

$0.00 ... due to TM issues, and bottom-feeding ".TV" (.Tuvalu) extension! This one is bad. Sorry.
Good Luck.

I tried to book some very attractive combinations of the word
olympic few years ago and Network Solutions (the only registrar at that time) did not allow me to proceed further. This word is a very well protected TM. You may be in for a big trouble soon.

Considering it owns the trademark, it HAS to protect it.

All companies and organizations have to protect their marks from any bottomfeeding slimey scumbags who try to infringe upon them or else they risk losing them.
