Have a look at what is being sold on this forum nowadays. Let's be honest. It's absolute garbage. The names being sold will be tossed around by resellers hoping to find an end user which will never come. Domainers hold onto their gems and will only sell at some ridiculous price which makes no sense from a buyers perspective if you want to see a reasonable ROI. Alright, I confess I have had a shit day, but there is truth to what I am saying ....

lol

i feel your pain

but if people want to buy garbage then so be it

though it still remains the sellers perogative to hold out for that ridiculous price, which they may get or never get.

they may pass on a reasonable - "lower profit than expected" offer, in hopes of a better one.
this feeling is enhanced when you receive various inquires on a domain.
it's re-inforces your perception that the name is worth more.

also, you have growth in the membership here and other forums, this adds to the number of "garbage" names and "low-ball" offers.

as many newbies are getting their feet wet! :)

another point is, the ROI time frame.

too many domainers when buying expect ROI in 10-18 months
others in 24-36 months
and fewer in 5-10 year range

while most sellers are hoping for 10 years or more for generics, most of the offers they receive are 2-3 years at best on the forums.

if you're reading the "domain news" threads every day when some name is sold for high numbers and calculate based on multiples, those numbers range 75 years and up.

from my perspective, i see that most domainers only value a domain for what it's worth today....they have no idea of the future.

it shows in the offers they make and that's why ...."Domainers hold onto their gems and will only sell at some ridiculous price"

you have to wait until others catch up on the learning curve, as they learn the true value of certain domains.

imo...

I guess it all depends on what you consider garbage. I have never seen this forum as a way to reach end users and probably never will. I see DNF as mainly a resource forum to help me with my domain business. I will tell you that I'm looking more towards the developmental side more and more.

You would have to be a crackhead to not think most of the domains being sold on this forum is not garbage. They have absolutely nothing going for them. Low development potential. Long. Low search count. No traffic. The list goes on.

Biggie, legend for not closing the thread. You need to have a laugh in between sorting through the garbage ;)

One man' garbage is another man's treasure. I know it is cliché but it is very true in the domaining industry.

One person may think bearinabeeoutfit.com is junk but someone else might see it as an opprotunity to develop and expand.

There is plenty of opportunity if you look outside of the English speaking world.
Most domainers chose and still choose to ignore that potential.
Problem is that very few can afford to ignore these markets. The rest are making a fatal business mistake, making conclusions prior to investigating and learning the subject which causes all kinds of NNNN.BIZ PREMIUM sales to be all over the board.

I am not a seller, it's just unfortunate that people 'invest' money on what is dead prior to its being born and neglect to think just a bit further.

IMO for those that are new to the industry, to make money with domains today you either have to adapt to new markets or need to concentrate on a very specific niche, combine with development to make 'real' money. Problem is that in order to buy the category killer or at least the 2nd , 3rd best keywords on that specific niche will also require realistically a minimal low xxx,xxx investment imo.

If some domainers are buying lesser names (garbage if you must) dont you think thats better than people not buying at all? Atleast there are sales around while the markets have taken a dip.
I'm happy to flip lesser names and get deals on good ones while waiting for the high tide to roll in.

it make take a while to sort thru the garbage, but every now and then a gem is found.

problem is ....that the pile gets bigger and bigger!

:)

with so many sales sections, it's spread out all over the forum

you got people trying to hide the crap behind threads with "no domain name in the title".

pushing the content waaaay down to the bottom of the post, so you can't see the crap when "hovering" over.

you actuall got to "step-in it" to smell it :)

you got "price droppers" and "thread bumpers" who'll push a "good name" with a reasonable price or expectation, down to page 3 or 4 in the que so fast that you'll miss it!

while those "price droppers" are bumping their threads every 24 hrs with stuff like "$1000 > $900 > $750 > $325 > $225 > $100 > $20 last offer before going back in the trash ...opps i mean vault. :)

dig dig dig

I am not trying to be confrontial. But, when was the last time you put one of your
gems on the forums?
Much less pricing it at the "domainer to domainer" price level.

Plus, we all have different ideas what a "gem" domain might be.

If I had owned iReport.com and offered it on the large forums, I would be lucky to get $ 5K for it.
That means I would have given away a $ 750K sale for $ 5K.
I realize this example is a little bit more drastic than other examples.
But, the principle is still the same.

You don't offer premium domains on the large forums unless you are willing
to accept "domainer to domainer" pricing.

Exactly. I've been selling my hand registrations very nicely this summer, names that many here consider "garbage."
A few of my recent sales:
roadconditions.org $500
resourcelocator.org $400
gilariver.org $300
& pending
veteranshealth.org $500
herzing.org $400
I try listing these in the "appraisal section" here and the response is nil.

The gems are here. You've got to mine them.

When I made my initial posting, I was going to reference you.
But, thought I would not draw any attention towards you.

However, I have noticed on many, many, many occasions where you have scooped in
within minutes of an initial post picking up some great domains.

I use to think you slept with one eye on the sales threads.

out of 50 threads, you will find 1 good domain for a cheap price =)

And, you don't like those odds? 2%

Out of the 25K domains that drop everyday, how many are gems?

2% of 25K is 500. Are there 500 gems dropping everyday?

And, how much competition is there for those drops?
They are not going at "domainer to domainer" price level.

I keep telling you guys but you don't listen.
You can find some of the best deals on the forums.
And, you don't have to compete with NameMedia, Schilling, Reinvent, etc.

One day, you will kick yourself for all of the missed opportunities.

Thats ok. We are keeping Acro in the financial style he has become accustomed to.
