So the .asia landrush is approaching (still 3 months left). Are you IN ?

Personally I think it's YAPE (Yet Another Pointless Extension).
I doubt there is such a thing as Asian identity. I do not see a purpose nor a need for that extension. It's not needed, nor do we need .africa or .america either...
I find the case for .eu to be more convincing as Europe is much more integrated economically and politically, still it's not enough to have a thriving TLD.

Yet I anticipate that the speculators will be there and will reg a few hundreds of thousands of domains. Then all those domains will sit undeveloped and turn .asia into a forgotten wasteland like... .eu ?
Nonetheless I am not complaining if people are rushing in. I will still be acquiring .com while they are looking the other way :-#:

I think there IS something as an Asian identity, and infact, Europe lacked that, since most European countries are just too busy bickering among themselves.

Think of any form you've filled out in which they asked your ethnicity. There's always an option for Asian-American (I'm talking from an American perspective), but have you ever seen an identity for European-American?

Again from an American perspective, and from the perspective of an Asian (Indian, to be exact) in America, most Asian-Americans maintain VERY strong ties to their home countries, which all come in Asia. Europeans, not quite. The Italians and the Irish came to the US centuries ago, while most Asians are still fresh immigrants.

And it also helps that Asians are among the most educated and consequently, among the richest immigrants.

Maybe so, but why wouldn't these people just use their home countries ccTLD such as .in .pk etc.

I just dont see the point in it, and unless you can get a super generic, ie. poker.asia, i dont think they'll be worth the reg fee.

I think the reg fee is like $30 too. Might be worth the odd speculation but they are auctioning the domains with more than one reg against them so it's a cash-in for sure.

I think there is something as an Asian identity. Think of the number of times you've seen Asian-American in the Ethnicity field in any form. Asians are generally classed as one group, and are even stereotyped similarly (nerdy, hard working IT types), whereas the European stereotypes vary a lot (Vodka loving Russians, Snobbish French, etc.)

Even the "idn" crowd (including those in China, Japan, etc) have no enthusiasm for .asia
.com is the undisputed king

No offense sashas but this is an inherently racist point of view above. I'm not pissed though I'm just amused. The truth is that white people make all those forms, I've always been bothered about being lumped into some non-existent entity whenever I fill in some american form. If we had our choice we would break into 100 different cultural identities and have nothing to do with any of the others. The only reason you don't have Euro-American on those same forms is because white people (who make the categories) actually know how absurd that would be.

Also we are classed as one group ONLY IN THE MINDS OF SOME WHITE PEOPLE. We do not do it ourselves. Also I would encourage you to actually get to know some people from asia, we are incredibly diverse. Look at myself for instance, I'm not hard-working, I'm a people person, I write poetry, and I have a huge dick to boot.

So again, no offense, but you are way off base on your logic here my friend.

... The Italians and the Irish came to the US centuries ago, while most Asians are still fresh immigrants...

The Chinese were right alongside the earliest invaders .. err.. I mean immigrants and in fact there is debate as to who actually 'discovered' America and a Chinese explorer is in the running (Not that it was actually 'discovered' as such as indigenous people had been living there for millenia until the 'good ole boys' arrived and claimed it for their own)

So many things wrong with this reply.

1. Europeans DO keep strong ties to their home countries.

2. I'd say more of the Asian countries bicker with themselves compared to Europe... China, North Korea, South Korea and Japan just to name a few.

3. Asians the most educated? Well according to many publications online, this is false as well. They did a census on this and believe it or not, that title actually belongs to immigrants from Africa.

I guess your referring to the later waves of college and tech talent etc...but that statement kinda reminds me of a clip from "the view" I saw the other nite where one of the hosts stated that Christianity is the oldest religion in the world...uh ever hear of B.C.? Scary.

nametrader, I would've answered those posts, but if you look at my previous comments, they were posted more than 5 months back. I was a complete newbie then with little knowledge of the industry. My views as well as financial situation has changed over the past 5 months.

And that is just about the domaining point of view. The comment that my original post was racist is something I don't feel the need to defend, since I don't really think it was racist. Moreover, I'm an Indian too, so how can I be racist against my own kind?

But nonetheless, I'll answer them.

So many things wrong with this reply.

1. Europeans DO keep strong ties to their home countries.

2. I'd say more of the Asian countries bicker with themselves compared to Europe... China, North Korea, South Korea and Japan just to name a few.

If you read my post, I said that Asians are AMONG THE MOST educated, not THE most educated. There's a world of difference in those two sentences. And yes, I do maintain that Asians are among the most educated - at least the ones who are on the internet. The standards of education in math and science are very high, and hence the huge outsourcing boom.

I'm in the US currently, and the current generation of Europeans here (mostly those who have been here for the past 100 years) don't really have very strong ties to their home countries. I know Italian-American college kids who haven't been to Italy even once in their entire lives, Irish-Americans who haven't set foot in Ireland. This isn't something unusual since the European immigrants have been a part of the American landscape for over a century now, and are as much American as any other. Yes, the Chinese too came at the same time, but never in such large number. Moreover, the Chinese were not able to integrate as much into the American society a 100 years ago as well as say, the Irish or the Italians. Why? Because at that time, racism was pretty rampant (keep in mind that until the civil rights movement didn't start until the 1960s - and the Chinese (or anyone not white) before this period could not integrate into the American society as well as an Irishman).

So the comment that the Chinese and other Asians came to the US at the same time as the Irish and the Italians - while based in fact - is not really relevant because the Chinese and other Asians could never really occupy that place of relevancy in the culture a 100 years ago. How many Chinese-American or Japanese-American or Indian-American politicians, movie stars, music stars, etc. can you name? On the other hand, there have been tons of Irish-American and Italian-American people in these fields. Heck, Hollywood was practically rebuilt by Italian-American people in the 60s and 70s (Scorsesse, Pacino, De Niro, Coppola, etc.).

No offense sashas but this is an inherently racist point of view above. I'm not pissed though I'm just amused. The truth is that white people make all those forms, I've always been bothered about being lumped into some non-existent entity whenever I fill in some american form. wrdekle, if you hadn't noticed, I'm from India. I have lived 19 of my 20 years there. I'm in the US just for my college (I'm studying English and Films btw) and I will be going back to India as soon as I finish school. My girlfriend is still in India, and I still make about 3 trips back home (mostly to be with my girl - I can afford it thanks to domaining :)) in an year. So yes, i CAN state that I know Asian people. I'm one of them myself :)

And while I can't say for Japanese or Chinese, I can say that most Indians here in the US fit the stereotype of the nerdy people. I go to University of Buffalo, and there are more than a thousand Indians here. And I can tell you, more than 90% of them are in these two fields: Engineering or Computer Science (for the more serious kind), and Business Administration (for the less serious kind). In fact, when people ask me whats my major and I say "English and Films", they ask me "You're an Indian, right? So how come?"

I don't have the time to look it up, but I can easily provide statistics for this.

Even in India, Engineering is by far, the biggest field. Jobs are plentiful and the pay is good, no matter what quality of college you graduate from. More than a million people give the exams for admission to Engineering colleges. My city itself has about a dozen engineering colleges. In fact, my city has over 200 high schools, and less than half a dozen of them actually have Arts as a subject. Its almost as if we strive too hard to fit the stereotype.

There are exceptions of course, just as there are exceptions in everything.

And as I said, I can't talk of all Asians, but I can talk of the 1.1 billion Indian people.

Just keep in mind folks that my views here are not racist or anything. Nowhere am I deriding any particular race or country. What I stated are merely historical facts (that the Italian and Irish integrated much more in the American society, for instance). Yes, I am critical of Indians, but as an Indian, I have the right to be critical of my country and my countrymen.

Cheers everyone!

Hmm Great! But my advice to you try not to talk about race to begin with. If a situation arise that you have to mention race talk good. It's the best thing to do because we live in a volatile world where race is a very sensitive issue. Let's better not raise discussions on it.

Other than that your confidence is good :)
