Wuhhh, what news :)

Today the story got covered at The Verge https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/28/24230587/tumblr-move-blogs-wordpress-automattic

Official press release has today's date, though we see the number '27' in the url, so, I assume these news were published yesterday: https://automattic.com/2024/08/27/shipping-tumblr-and-wordpress/ .. or, maybe some clash of time-zones and dates :)

I have been always curious what will be their move at Tumblr.. Automattic tried selling domain name there, though that was done very softly.. still curious about the numbers..

big job > around 500'000'000 Tumblr blogs to be migrated.. huhh :) some task!!

Let us see how it goes.

Hopefully they make it work well and Tumblr starts returning! .. can it be resurrected :?

Tumblr was always a porn and spam blog platform … did automattic buy it?

Oh, Yes! :)

Yes, Automattic owns Tumblr. The company acquired Tumblr in August 2019 from Verizon Media Group for an estimated $3 million (I have also heard the roumers that the amount was $300k, instead), following its previous ownership by Yahoo, which had purchased it for $1.1 billion in 2013 :)

The league of big boys :)

Here is a breakdown:

1. Yahoo purchased Tumblr for $1.1 billion in May 2013
2. The acquisition was intended to revitalize Yahoo and provide it with a new revenue source, but these plans did not materialize as expected
3. Yahoo struggled to monetize Tumblr effectively. The platform failed to meet ambitious sales goals, and there were difficulties integrating Tumblr's culture and operations with Yahoo's corporate structure >> https://www.pon.harvard.edu/daily/business-negotiations/yahoos-tumblr-acquisition-nb/
4. In 2017, Verizon acquired Yahoo, which included Tumblr as part of the deal.
5. Finally, in August 2019, Tumblr was sold to Automattic (the owner of WordPress) for just $3 million.

Few references:

.. this is a story that I follow up myself > I am really curious on how difficult is to acquire a social media network and not tanking it.

.. you might have noticed that cleaning DNForum and introducing "no shitting on companies and not insulting members" has brough back some traffic to DNF (revived the dead forum) and even industry brands are curious about possibilities here. At Acorn > the result was opposite > a number of old members loved "keyboard warrior" freedom and have started boikoting the forum (though keep watching it).

Tumblr story is really, really interesting and super educational.. And, maybe, just maybe, some day, I grow big enough to buy it from Automattic :) .. childish dreams, of course :D :D :D

lol yes that company tanked heavily but Wordpress is a good company to own a network like that, but its tricky sometimes how to introduce new concepts to a large audience. Like my Facebook group, 170,000+ members, it’s like herding cats.
