I hope the title doesn't offend anyone here, but in the past 24 hours I have had email correspondence with 4 or 5 domain owners, and the general consensus among them was that the public announcement of this sale is "bad news". Most domainers in the .CA realm are still big buyers, and although there have been quite a few rumoured $100,000+ sales to date, they have all been private, and therefore an air of skepticism about these rumours. With this announcement, there is a fear that the days of "cheap" .ca are over. Not only will the $600K sale encourage domainers to bid higher, it will also bring in a new group of speculators. If you have already built up a decent portfolio, and are ready to sell some off, this isn't bad news at all, but if you are just getting started, and hoping to get some premiums on the cheap, it may be the end. Once really big money investment starts to flow into .CA, the prices will be beyond the reach of the average guy (or gal)!

Well, at least that sums up the feelings among those I have talked to. I don't know if it's all doom and gloom for buyers :undecided:, only time will tell...

I can see some people using this sale as reference, even if they don't fully understand everything behind it (like the fact the sale included a developed site with an insane amount of traffic for a .CA).

"You'll notice Jobs.ca recently sold for 600k. My name at "inflated price" is a steal in comparison".

I've seen this happen in a few other industries. I think this reported sale is a good and bad thing, depending on where you are in the .CA game. People that hold premiums will be more inclined to just sit tight and wait for the big payout. People seeing the sale will be drawn to the cctld by the numbers, since they are encouraging.

.ca is restricted, you must have a "Canadians Presence"

No minimum for reg as far as years go... well, obviously a 1 year minimum applies...

I prefer namespro.ca $12.88/yr cdn

You can go to CIRA.ca to find a registrar for .ca domains
They average around $12 CDN/year I'd say
It's a 1-year minimum registration
You must be a Canadian Citizen or Canadian red'g company (You can find a list of requirements on the CIRA.ca website)

You can look at that both ways. IMO sales like that will raise awareness :)

I think it's good that a .ca sale like that was publicly announced, and I'm glad they did it. Like others said, it was only a matter of time, and it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone these days that domains have this kind of value. The buyer did mention that traffic played an important part in the sale price, and it is a super generic.

The potential of a domain like jobs.ca is really staggering when you think about it.

Not reporting big sales like this to keep .ca owner expectations down could only last so long. If owners start asking for big prices for their .ca domains because of this sale, I think they will get a quick reality check from potential buyers anyway.

I love that there have been three record reported .ca sales in a few months time, 2008 is looking good.

It's absolutely a great thing for the .ca.

Not only will it bring attention to the domain space and yes; some of us will benefit from better sales if that's your game plan.

But just as importantly it will bring international attention. One of the biggest hold backs to the .ca space is the US centric monetization. I mean lets face it when you see a divorce lawyer in miami ad popping up on a term such as vancouverlawyer.ca you have to admit the system is F***ed.

As the various domain monetization systems approach the saturation point competition will point/force them toward developing niches or overlooked areas.

Would you develop in a TLD such as .de or .co.uk where there is extraordinary action going on or in a sleepy backwater TLD such as CIRA has created.

Regardless of whether you own "premium" domains or are late to the party you need to earn $$$$$ to make this all work.

DNP .. We put that up as a "holding site".

I can see some people using this sale as reference, even if they don't fully understand everything behind it (like the fact the sale included a developed site with an insane amount of traffic for a .CA).

"You'll notice Jobs.ca recently sold for 600k. My name at "inflated price" is a steal in comparison".

Supply - Demand - Hype

Overall, I think this is good for the .ca market. Rob and I had many discussions on whether to make it public. From my point of view, I thought it was a good idea. In some ways it makes for a bit of a benchmark. If I look at purchasing other .ca names (I have about a 1000) I will measure its worth in comparison to jobs.ca. If jobs.ca gets 1500 - 2000 uniques, and is a category killer, I will measure other similar names with that in mind.

In my opinion, "traffic" is the key component in valuing a domain... not the only one, but the key one.
