I am wondering if anyone has advice for calling on end-users via telephone. This is essentially a cold-calling situation. So what's your approach? Do you have a strategy that you find successful?

I have not really done it to this point, and would like to minimize trial and error if i can get any helpful tips. I think I will not have a hard time discussing the value of domains, but what I am more concerned about is how to get oneself to that point in the conversation.

I have the idea that the second I let on that it is sales call, and that I have something to offer them, their wall of apprehensions goes up immediately. So how does one break the ice so to speak? What do you say first? Are you upfront right off the bat and if so how do you make them feel comfortable about a situation they are likely to have negative stereotypes about (sleazy salesman, etc.)?

Thanks!

you need to write a script of things to say, so you won't waste time mumbling. After a while you'll get it right. just remember one thing " features tell, benefits sell"

The very first sentence has to be an intriguing sales pitch regarding their business on the web and how the "right" domain will make it happen.

I personally believe phone calls are not the way to go at the beginning.

I recommend emailing the potential end user first. Then, working your way into a phone call to be more specific and try to see if you can make a deal. Best way to gage whether they are interested at that point.

well ive stumbled onto a new strategy and I'd like to try to pan it out. I'm using the phone book! :) ... and cross-referencing it with the internet to see which companies don't yet have websites .. not a bad idea heh ;)

Homer,

If you're calling out the masses from a phonebook. There is no way around sounding like a salesmen. Just based on the amount of phone calls you make....it's not going to sound great and a lot of times calling from phonebook isn't helpful as you're not talking to the right person in charge.

Makes sense but... on the other hand if they don't have a website they likely aren't very Internet savvy.
The problem with pitching domain names to end users, they are clueless about domains. They are not educated about the strategic value of domain names and they don't see why they should spend more than reg fee on a domain. You have a LOT of education work on your hands.
