To begin with, I must admit that I know very little regarding domain names and values. However, recently I have discovered that a domain name I have owned for many years could be worth a fair amount of money. I see there are quite a few appraisal services in the market and was wondering which one is best to go for that doesn't charge a ludicrous fee.

Many thanks

Paid appraisals are worthless most of the time, they will tell you what you wanna hear. Keep your money.
This forum is packed with seasoned domainers, if you post the name in the Appraisals section I would be surprised if you don't get meaningful and down to earth appraisals, in line with current market conditions.

In order to be a successful domainer, you need to be your own appraiser.

My first suggestion is to read all of the sales data at DNJournal. Second, read David Kesmodel's book. Third, read the domain blogs.

I ordered sedo.com appraisal service couple times. I used to have Moniker appraisal but since they redesigned the new look, I'm not sure how to order their appraisal service.

I'm fairly new as well but I agree that most paid for appraisals are crap. I like to use estibot.com for quick appraisals. They have a lot of other tools you can use as well once you are a member. (not being a member limits you to 5 appraisals per day) In the end it is really what you think it is worth however. . .and of course what you can get someone to pay for it ;)

Look at sales of similar keyword domains at http://dnsaleprice.com/ or at http://www.estibot.com/sales.php

Do NOT waste your $ for paid appraisals. These appraisals are not worth the value of paper on which they are printed.

Is an appraiser ready to pay you 75% or even 50% of the so called appraised value ?

Real appraisal is the price on which both buyer and seller agree and complete the transaction.

If your domain is related to a specific business or industry , try to find endusers or advertisers for your keyword.

Seek suggestions at dnf .

Good luck.

The best way to find out the real value of a domain is to look at comparables (what similar names have sold for). Don't waste your time on "appraisals".

very few domains are worth enough to be appraised

but if it's a gem

look for a company that keeps it on-line in a database to show a seller or a judge (divorces now big on domain appraisals LOL)

estibot we use to lowball seller usually

sedo is a joke as to their estimates worthless

you want something worth nothing then yeah free means you get what you paid for it

a paid appraisal is only worth paying for if the domain is investment grade beef

99.9% of domains are not investment grade beef
