Which extension(s) are the best for investing in a domain name -- considering differences in current prices and your expectations of possible increases or decreases in future value? You should be able to vote for more than one extension by checking more than one box.

For example, if you think that .COM rules and no other extensions will ever amount to much -- vote for .COM only.

If you think that .NET is way undervalued relative to .COM and will increase in value compared to current prices -- vote for .NET.

If you like a diversified portfolio with some blue chip .COMS and some risky upstarts that may fly high or may crash -- then vote for .COM and the risky upstart.

Credit to Patrick66 for starting the idea. I wanted to expand it to include relative investment value and multiple extension choices.

How do you vote for both .info and .biz Bob? It disables and says you have already voted... once you vote for one extension.

Check multiple boxes before you vote... at least it worked for me.

(Any folks from Florida want to try voting for more than one extension? make sure you completely check the box... don't just partially check it... )

I picked 3 different extensions and then hit the vote button after--it worked that way.

Great question Domebase! My opinion is that return-on-investment determines what the best investment is. I personally estimate .INFO will appreciate on-average 30% return per year over the next three years. Sorry, I cannot share the analysis at this time as it is proprietary [I threw out the napkin with my notes]. Please do not respond indicating that travel.info will yield 700,000,000% or Iam2dumbaboutslots.info was -93.5% because you sold it for $2. I am talking on average.

I have read Mr. Mole frequently reply to request for .info appraisals “It is too soon to sell”. In my opinion, it is another way of saying “There is no other investment you can make that is is appreciating at 30% per year” IMHO.

P.S. As they say with weigh loss pills – your can enhance your weight-loss results with exercise. The above 30% estimate was without development! You can enhance your ROI with development. I am personally am developing my domains.

Thanks folks. :)

Interesting results beginning to take shape. Keep those votes comin'. Also, just want to say again that Patrick66 originally had the idea, I just made it multi-choice with price considerations. Here is his original thread --

More data on different extensions... in terms of relative registration trends... if you have not already seen this.

http://www.whoisreport.com/domain-counts/

Interesting to compare ranking of net added domains (new - deleted) to ranking of investment potential in our DNF poll.

Please vote if you have not already done so. Let's increase the statistical power of this poll! Remember, you can vote for one or more extensions.

Well, I voted for .us. I think it is respectable and in high profile and will gain momentum in the next few years. I believe .com is always king, but the .us is extremely popular.

Sorry, my mistake. Second was supposed to be org.uk. I should not change it now because people have already voted... just sum the two lines to get total votes for co.uk. Maybe if this prof. business does not work out, I can get a job designing voting machines in Florida?

Concerning the results thusfar, isn't it interesting how much support there is for .INFO despite --

* lack of advertisement (particularly in US) by the registry

* Sunrise shennanigans

* many prime generics being tied up by insiders and speculators who are not developing them

Personally, I think it is a testimony to the international meaning of the extension and lack of restraints on ownership/transfer.

I think the jury is still out concerning the future.

Question: Suppose for a moment that someone from Afilias called you up and asked for your advice concerning what they should do to make .INFO succeed. What would you tell them? Please post it here. (Hint: this may not be as hypothetical as you might think).

i'm not surprised at all by the results, you're asking a group of people which involves a significant proportion who would directly benefit if .info did take off. This makes your sample group biased and an inaccurate mirror for the real world masses.

I agree. The real world masses surf .co.uk, .de, .ne.jp blah blah.

Hey... you used the "b____" word! :) That get's an academic's juices flowing.

You are right that it is a sample of domain name specialists, speculators, developers etc... and that this is quite different than what one would get on the street (e.g. if Jay Leno went around asking folks what names they would recommend buying). It is also true that some of the respondents have a financial interest in the results.

By analogy, suppose that you were trying to evaluate how much land rights for gas and oil are worth in different locations. You would probably get quite different answers if you ask people in the gas and oil industries than if you poll the general public. Is this a bias? Perhaps... perhaps not.

One of the problems with asking the public about which name extensions would be best to buy or sell is that many do not even understand the distinction between doing this legitimately vs. infringing on trademarks. My sad guess is that most of the public have heard of "cyberquatting" and view ANY buying or selling of names except for immediate use by company or organization as cyberquatting... instead of more accurate definition of cyberquatting as purchasing name to sell to trademark holder for profit.

So... yeah. It is not a poll of the general public. And... yeah, some follks answering have a financial interest. But I still think it is useful information and I would like to think it is not "biased" if one reognizes what it is measuring. It would be fun to go "jaywalkng" with Leno and ask people on the street -- "What internet name extension do you think is undervalued" :)

One last thought -- Since there are many more .org and .net registrations than .info currently, wouldn't you think that a bias in terms of people voting for extensions they currently hold would result in many more votes for .org and .net than .info? This is not empirically confirmed by the poll results.
