Hi there

I have just negotiated the sale of a domain and we have settled on a price. The only problem I have is that I don't know how to pay for it safely without him running off with the money and not producing the goods.

Has anyone got any advice on this as I normally just buy through auctions etc?

Thanks in advance

Your best bet is probably Escrow.com. That is how I close that vast majority of deals (buying & selling).

I would use Escrow.com.

But if it is less than 1000 and you like to secure it quick, may use paypal. It runs some risks but I have paid via paypal quite a number of times to strangers for domains which I would like to secure quickly.

If you are smart like me, use sedo escrow. Escrow.com is not good enough for domain transactions.

I have had at least tweny transactions...from small amounts to very large, with zero problems..

What is the your reason for saying not to use them? Have you had a bad experience?

I have used Escrow.com many times. I am not exactly sure how Sedo Escrow is any more secure for domain transactions.

Escrow.com or Moniker.com escrow (despite the recent glitch, they are very good).

sedo actually takes possession of the domain when it can be pushed from one account to another in same registrar.

this adds a level of comfort to both buyer and seller.

escrow never takes possesion of a domain.

imo...

Aye, Sedo do the job better.

Still, I have been sold stolen domains at both Sedo and using escrow.com and been fecked up the ass both times with no chance of recompense.

Now... I will use any escrow but will ask for some ridiculous criteria to be met to prove ownership and to prove who they really are... copies of driving licence plus a photo of them from a cell phone outside their house.. etc etc.

Not being burnt again. :uhoh:

If you call a person out and ask for a load of ID, any dodgey domain thief will run a mile.
A genuine seller will be happy to take a couple of other steps to secure a sale if its a decent sale.

I recommend EscrowDNS. They actually respond to inquiries and are customer focused.

I recently had a non-payer bidder on Sedo for a $1k deal. I emailed the buyer after Sedo released his information and he still wanted the domain. I started a transaction with EscrowDNS, and they worked with him for well over a week to get payment. We split the 7% escrow fee, so for the 3.5% out of my take, it was a great transaction.

Escrow.com, EscrowDns, Sedo or Moniker Escrow.

I've used escrow.com for transactions big and small. Safe, effortless. The only drawback, and a very minor one, is that you can negotiate a deal in whatever currency you want, but they make the exchange of money for domain transaction in USD only... and I am in Euros, so sometimes I take a small hit on conversion fees.

But for the ease and peace of mind, an acceptable cost of doing business.

The only REAL escrow is Moniker escrow - they are escrowing domain and the money. Escrow.com does not and is especially dangerous for seller ebcause buyer has the last word - if buyer will keep claiming he did not get the domain, seller does nto get the money (buyer can keep same whois as before).

Sedo does not have account at all registrars and if they do not have they let seller push directly to the buyer (or give EPP), also dangerous.
