The other day, I was looking around for short and I thought meaningless letter combinations that sounded good for possible websites. I found "tokkel.com" wasn't registered.

After checking Google, and discovering some usage, I used a couple of "online translators" to find a meaning. I found it is a word in the Dutch language which means "pluck" or "strum". At least that is what the translator said.

A couple of days later, I went to register the domain through Go Daddy and it was listed as unavailable. I tried again today through whois.net and found that it is registered as of Oct 20, 2007.

Looking at the company's website, they say they use "automated linguistic software" to register domain names.

I am wondering exactly what that means. Does that mean they are using "online translators" as "linguistic software"?

It really doesn't matter to me, but a message to beware using
these online translators.

I guess the best advice is that if you find something you want register it right away.

Regards,

Sags

There are people that moniter what names are "checked" for registration and if you don't take them they often will. There are some links around this forum about this practice.

Many times they will just "taste" them for 3 days, and if no traffic drop them again. You best advice above is right on. Companies like dynadot give you a +-4 day grace period to drop names for a credit on your account which allows you time to do some additional research and also see if there are any traffic to names.

With google translate you have to specify the language choice. So if you are not sure, you will be stalled. Probably better to take the term and put "quotes" around it ie, "tokkel" and see if you get any good hits and sort out possible uses and languages from there. Then you can go back into translators etc.

You have a link to this company and their statement?

I found with one registrar that when I registered a .com, immediately thereafter the .org was registered. Then, later on, the .org was not renewed.
