France gets two new Internet domains
The status of the French territories of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin was recently changed, with each getting a new ISO country code⦠and a new Internet suffix.
Internet country codes are historically based on the equivalent "real world" ISO country code table. Updates to the ISO list therefore tend to have a knock-on effect for Internet extensions, as shown by the activation of .RS for Serbia and .ME for Montenegro.
Two new extensions in the root
Recent changes have given the two French territories of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin added independence and have granted them inclusion in the ISO list with their own country codes, respectively BL and MF.
As it did with the aforementioned ex-Yugoslav countries, ICANN has reacted to these changes by updating its own country code list and creating two new entries in the Internet root: .BL and .MF.
Not ready for launch
But although now technically ready to become functional, don't expect to see .BL and .MF domain names anytime soon.
ICANN won't delegate the extensions to anyone until the French authorities requests it. But the French government probably won't until the request for proposals for management of its namespaces which it initiated in February 2007 is completed. Problem, the RFP hasn't been officially opened yet and no date has been set for it to beginâ¦
