Considering using some AMEX rewards points on a Bose Companion 5 set. Currently using an aging Altec Lansing 5.1 system combined with an old JBL Bass amp. Anyone using the Bose? Or the Companion 3? Thoughts / opinions?

Thanks!

Depending on what type of music you are listening. However, Bose is overpriced and the quality is not that great.

Thanks all! So what would you suggest? Trying to save some space around my desk, but enjoy listening to some good tunes while working. Mostly classic rock, but more technical, along the lines of Rush, Queen, etc, with some older metal, alternative, folk mixed in. Yes, do need some decent bass for the NIN et all.

I guess you need to determine what's more important, saving desk space or having a better sound system?

I listen to electronic music, ya know the doof doof music, and got myself a Logitech 5.1 system when I had my own apartment. The sound clarity was very good and the bass was big. I'm sure rock/alternative music would sound great on it too. I was getting complaints from the downstairs apartment all the time. Meh, they just don't appreciate good music.

If you read threads like this...

I think you will find that Bose is generally overpriced for what they are. Although I have listened to some of their high end surround sound systems which I must admit I was impressed with. But I think they get away with subpar equipment for their low end systems based on branding alone.

IMO.
