this is a fake address...

anything before an @ is ignored in a website address

i.e.

http://[email protected]

people have used it in the past to spoof website address for people who do not pay much attention to their browsing.

AS FAR AS I KNOW:

Ciqala is slightly wrong. Anything before the @ sign is not ignored by the browser, it is treated as a username. So theoretically the Fiat people could have set up their site to redirect everyone using that username to a special site.

so they could do the same with [email protected], or http://[email protected], etc

oops george is correct...

when i post at work it is in between a lot of alt-tab's and minimising of windows coupled with the furtive look over the shoulder... (my screen faces into the middle of the office, i'm not meant to be surfing as "work should be a priority" well so my boss says anyways and people are always walking around

so i didnt quite have time to explain myself clearly but i hoped you would get the gist(sp.?) of what i meant :D

actually george is 99% correct.

the correct syntax is http://username:p[email protected]/

and not
http://[email protected]/

Its a very very tiny mistake, i know, but it could be important to someone so i point it out.

I hadn't thought of doing that. Opens up a whole new range of domain names. :D

if anyone is familiar with F-ckedcompany.com, they used that technique to play a cheesy April Fools Day joke on people.

They set up a website containing a fake press release that said that they had been awarded millions of dollars in venture capital. They set up the URL like this:

http://www.yahoo.com/news/public/info/[email protected]

and then people assumed the article they published was real cuz it looked like it was coming from a respected source (Yahoo).

Its the same thing people use to spoof cnn's site...

its in many many faq's on internet pranks and what not.

except they say to get a free hosting account and then use the i.p. to hide the name

i.e. http://www.cnn.com/news/[email protected]/dailynews/

of course thats because those damn script kiddies cant afford their own webserver :)

and draqon is right it does make for a cheesy 'but very funny' april fools prank :)
