I'm thinking about buying a name, but it is important that nobody can find out that I am the owner, or that I am involved with the name.

If I buy the name from someone, and they transfer it - do I just choose privacy in my new account when I initiate the transfer? Do I run the risk of someone knowing who owned it?

With privacy protection, is a subpoena the only way people can find out who is the real owner?

Also - using the domaintools whois history feature - if I buy a name, and then 3 months later I add privacy - does my name show up for the 3 months before I added privacy?

thanks

If the domain has whois privacy, and if you are using your own nameservers that domain has whois privacy. You should be ok, but if they are serious about getting to you they will contact isp or webhost or registrar.

You have to add privacy right away after a tranfser to you (I do it within a few minutes) or upon registration to not have a record of your information in the whois ever, YES there is a whois history on all domains, if you pay the 9.95 membership a month or whatever it us to domaintools.com you can easily look this up..the easiest way to do this whole thing is to create a new account somewhere with a "new" whois identity (whatever you want it to be) i.e. Jumbala Wumbala of Swahili, etc..along with that domain as the email address (say it is blah.com you would use [email protected] for the whois) and have this set-up BEFORE a name push to you..that way when the whois transfers over to the defaults in the account it is in those "new" details..then as soon as it's there just add privacy on it and you should be good to go...just keep in mind that different places work different ways but this is easy to do with enom, moniker, godaddy, and their resellers...PM me if you need more help! :eek:k:
