I mean just two from the top of my head are search.com and news.com

They own tons of others like them. IMHO they probably have the best domain portfolio I know of.

Here's an interview I did with Matthew Barzun in, I guess, about 1997 or thereabouts, relating to CNET's domain name collection. I'm guessing that's where you saw the TV.com for $15,000 quote!

All of these domains are completely unnecessary, though... they could have created a whole family of sites using logical subdomains of one domain, and then they would be better "branded" as being part of the same family.
