Google Launches New Company To Tackle Aging, Related Diseases
On Wednesday, Google announced the launch of a new health technology company -- called Calico -- that will focus on aging and related diseases, potentially using Google's computing abilities to research such ailments, USA Today reports (Barr, USA Today, 9/18).
About the Company
Calico -- which will operate as a separate entity from Google -- will focus on age-related diseases including:
Diabetes;
Heart disease; and
Obesity (Leuty, "BiotechSF," San Francisco Business Journal, 9/18).
Arthur Levinson -- former CEO of biotechnology firm Genentech and chair of Apple -- will serve as CEO of the new company.
He said Calico might fund academic scientists for the company's early research but also could hire its own researchers.
Levinson noted that the new company might rely on Google's computing abilities (Cain Miller/Pollack, "Bits," New York Times, 9/18).
