Can someone explain how this site gets this traffic?

I'm a little confused on something and thought you'd guys be a big help:

Let's say I own a domain (this is just example) called WoodChair.com. When I type Wood Chair into the address bar (no search engine), it takes me to a website called WoodFurniture.com. I check and there is no Wood-Chair.com registered or Wood-Chair.net, or Woodchair.net. And I own WoodChair.com.

So how is this other site, WoodFurniture.com getting this traffic automatically directed to his site?

And do address bars still automatically default to a .com when just keywords are entered or is that not necessarily the case anymore? And info is appreciated.

I think some browsers would redirect to a keyword related address that is popular.

In FireFox it does redirect to a popular site or bring up a google search results page. I dont know more about the algorithm. In IE it seems to take you to google search results.

Thank you - it does seem that the site's popularity makes sense. Though, that puts the owner of the specific keyword domain at a truly unfair disadvantage!

So...if Firefox takes you to a popular, keyword related site, Verizon forces you to one of their sites, etc...then what is all this hype about going for keyword rich/specific domain names?

Any keyword domain worth purchasing is going to already have established sites up and running...so how does this whole idea of organic type-in traffic hold up?

this is correct, firefox/google determines if the first result from the google search results is "relevant" and if yes, it directs you straight to that site, if it does not deem the first result relevant then it directs you to the google search results page.

The reason WoodFurniture.com would rank for the keywords Wood Chair is because nobody else is using those keywords. If you use it then you'll rank over WF. It's all in the usage of keywords. The more you use it and content is relevant, the higher you'll rank or get 'spotted' in browser.

Hi

the purpose of getting "keyword rich" domains is because, the SE's use 'keywords" to set the pricing for advertisers within their search engines.

as in adwords for Google

these "keyword rich" type of domains, are within the scope that "someone will search the net using these specific terms or combination of, to find a particular product or service".

this is why you have some 4, 5 and 6 word domain names that get traffic.
some can be 25 letters or longer!
