Can Verisign just go ahead and delete my domain name?

Dear Mr. Smith

Please see below. We have been forwarded this message from Verisign:

Dear GoDaddy.com,

All of the domain names below are owned by John Smith and they all
appear to infringe the name rights and trademarks of third parties.

The domain owner is responsible for ensuring that the registered
domain name does not infringe third party's rights. Please request information on why he or she claims to be entitled to hold the domain name within 48 hours. Should the domain owner fail to provide a sufficient answer, the Admin-C will cause the deletion of the domain name without further notice because of an infringement of the domain name registration agreement.

We also request additional information regarding why there are 8 different
addresses for the registrations including a "123 anytown".

Please contact your customer and let us know if you have further questions.

yep, this must be a scam.

verisign isn't involved in administration of de domains afaik (they happen to be a common member of denic, but that doesn't give them any rights to delete .de domains).

did godaddy charge you their usual 29.90$ for this?

if not, the godaddy involvement may also be just a scam. if you post the full email header (anonymize your own email address) we could have a look at it.

When i replied to lisa i got an auto responder.

"I will be out of the office until December 4 and will not be responding to email. Please send legal disputes to [email protected]. All other requests may be sent to [email protected]. Thank you."

As for any charges, I havent seen any go through my accounts.

Thanks for your help.

Update!!

Looks like the email may be legit, just phoned godaddy and they did generate an email forwarding the "complaint" to me from verisign. But now Im confused on who the admin C is controled by I thought it was godaddy acting as the admin C and not verisign. Now sending an inquiry to verisign.

I still don't get how verisign is involved in this.

Do you used the default GoDaddy Trustee/Proxy Admin-C in Germany? some lawyer ("Anwaltskanzlei")? or did they change it to verisign?

Maybe verisign, on behalf of third parties, has bullied your proxy admin-c into agreing to delete your domain.

That's still kinda strange, as your proxy admin-c is supposed to act on your behalf - and in your best interest. Then again, nothing surprises me when Godaddy is involved.

If they simply want to drop your name, maybe you still have time to switch to another admin-c?

I suggest you check denic whois and find out who's listed as your admin-c

Check the full header of the mail to see where the email came from and possibly verify the IP address of the originator at arin.net to see if it is in a verisign IP-address block.

Other than that DENIC (the DE registry) can actually require the registrar to send letters like this based on a complaint/dispute they received, so this could be legit.

Where is the name registered though? Through GoDaddy? Or through Verisign? Or maybe GoDaddy is using Verisign's Namestore platform to register .DE names.

This is the first and only post I will make publically in regards to this matter. I am investigating on what basis and grounds these emails were sent out. There are several red flags when first viewing the email(s) in question including, original headers being removed on a forwarded message, the original message addressed “Dear GoDaddy.com,” with no individual contact information, along with punctuation and accuracy fallacies. Those reasons stated along with the fact that the email was sent @ 4:37pm on the day previous to an American Holiday cause me to question the validity of the initial email.

I am asking the legal and investigative help of fellow DNF members to help clear this matter. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

In any event, I apologize to others for any inconvenience and will do my best to make due once this matter is over.

Just keep in mind that this might be a reaction from Verisign to an email they have received from the registry, DENIC, which goes out to the registrant and the reseller (GoDaddy). Having an invalid whois is reason for deletion of the domain in most TLDs. In DE it's worse if neither the admin contact nor the registrant have a valid address in Germany.

Please either post the headers of the email or check them yourself - it will help to figure out where the mail really originated and/or if it is spoofed.
