I was reading the domain news here and saw the husband.com and wife.com news.
It seemd the economy of domains is mirroring the real estate troubles of the real estate home sector.

By that id, can you mortgage a domain name?

Domain capital and a few other companies will give you a loan in exchange for a quality domain.

Domains are not equal to real estate, simply because unlike domains, there is a unified appraisal method and recording thereof for real estate. The places that would give you a loan with domains as collateral are essentially "pawn shops" and they will give you the least amount of money possible.

I think interest rate will be pretty high as domain is intangible.

Good point.

Even though courts are starting to recognize domains as assets, I think we still may be perhaps 5-10 years out as domains being a mainstream investment strategy.

By then, perhaps there will be a few savvy mutual funds wrapped around internet properties to include not only dynamite sites but also domains.

But I really don't foresee the day when you can walk into a bank and get a equity line of credit or loan against a domain portfolio.

What you are more likely to see in the very near future are domains be property to be liquidated for divorce proceedings.

This is such a specialized market.

There is no real deffinative guide that some one can reference like Kelly Blue Book for cars.
