CCTLD question

Please i would like to know what happens to country code TLD when a country divide and it changes it name? just like Russia and Soviet Union

This happened with .yu, .me and .rs. However, Montenegro came out "on top" so to say for a ccTLD that became a gTLD.

I don't know how many died in the wars though... Recent history.
