China will promote the use of domain names in Chinese characters in order to make the website names easier to remember.

The China Internet Network Information Center has set up a registry service system and has chosen fifteen cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, to promote the use of Chinese domain names, China Radio International reported on Monday.

Domain names are the code names for websites on the Internet. Composed of solely Chinese characters, the Chinese domain names are not only easier for Chinese people to remember, but also avoid confusion and disputes caused by similar spellings and pronunciations under the pinyin system.

Usless if they want to attract non chinese readers, it would make sense to own Chinese character, Pinyin and english versions of the same name!

Note- Google throws up 9.5 million .com.cn results- they are all English / Pinyin domain names!

This will provide the breakthrough that speculators in IDN have been waiting for. The political will to popularize IDN in China will mean that resources allocated will be huge. Many, however, will still go for dot com in preference to dot CN. I believe we are already seeing the benefits of this. I have an Chinese IDN that is already generating 100+ hits a day, and this is not even the tip of the iceberg!

Don't you need a plug-in to view this?

Yes, but only if as I you are unfortunate enough to be dependant on Internet Explorer as I am. Next version will include this. Can be down loaded for www.IDN-now.com. Chinese use a lot Linux, so Bill will have to get his act together.

Google has no problem with cut and pasted Chinese Characters, which can be obtained from online dictionaries, such as:

http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict_welcome.php?url=/chindict/chindict.php

More dictionaries can be identified through Google. Some good free ones, others on subscription.

Overture supports IDN keywords, although strangely more Arabic and Russian than Chinese keyword searches being registered at the moment.

If you use domainsite.com as a registrar, then you only have to paste in the Chinese characters, encodement is done automatically.

We have registered some 2,000 domains in 6 non-european languages and don't speak a word of any of them. Domains initially registered on Google Search Scores but the Landings at Trafficz are increasing nicely especially in Chinese, although traffic earning are limited due lack of Chinese PPC market.

The important thing is to be able to pick up potentially valuable domains for $7 a go!

It is possible although I am already getting much more promising traffic on my Dot Com IDNs than on my large collection of dot CN three letter acronyms. My business plan is to disinvest from dot CN, so if you are interested I might be able to do you a good price!

I do not like IDN but this move for .cn will have a HUGE impact for the future ...don't forget that we speak about China not a small pacific island registry :)

I admire dwrixon (honestly). Personally, I'm not 100% comfortable registering French-word CNO, even I have taken 2 full-year courses of French in college (and studied alongside French-speaking students for some years in secondary school.
