@Text:CHINA THREATENS TO EXECUTE SARS SUFFERERS WHO SPREAD VIRUS
China threatened to execute anyone who deliberately causes death or injury by spreading Sars, as officials promised more doctors, hospitals and money to fight the deadly flu-like virus in rural areas.
TodayÃâ¢s warning by ChinaÃâ¢s Supreme Court appeared to be an effort to force people to comply with quarantines and other restrictions.
It came as officials fought to block Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) from spreading to the countryside, which is home to many of ChinaÃâ¢s 1.3 billion people.
Rural areas have accounted for only 155 of ChinaÃâ¢s more than 5,100 Sars cases. But officials have called for increased efforts to protect rural villages, especially by keeping migrant workers from carrying the virus in from cities.
ÃâWe have not seen a major spread into the countryside, but we cannot tell whether that might change in future,Ãâ Qi Xiaoqiu, director of the Heath MinistryÃâ¢s Department of Disease Control, said.
Sars has killed 267 people on ChinaÃâ¢s mainland.
The Supreme Court warning says people who violate quarantines and spread the virus can be jailed for up to seven years.
It said those who cause death or serious injury by Ãâdeliberately spreadingÃâ the virus can be jailed for 10 years to life, or might even be executed.
Chinese authorities frequently threaten harsh punishments - including possible executions - during emergencies.
About half ChinaÃâ¢s Sars cases have been in the capital Beijing, and nearly 4,000 residents who might have been exposed to carriers remain under quarantine at home to check for signs of the disease.
