"At the end of 2005, China is expected to have 34 million subscribers, compared with 39 million in the United States, according to new data from market research firm iSuppli. By the end of 2007, China will have 57 million broadband subscribers, compared with 54 million U.S. subscribers. In ensuing years, China is expected to widen its lead over the United States.

Today there are more than 150 million broadband subscribers worldwide, according to IMS Research. More than 51 million have signed up for service since the beginning of 2004. This tremendous growth rate shows no signs of slowing, and it is forecast that the number of broadband subscribers will surpass 400 million in 2009."

does this really surprise anyone?
only 1/5, or so, of all the U.S. can even get highspeed.
WHEN, they get equal technology in place, they'll surpass the U.S. like we were sitting still.

Yes, to compete you are going to have to hit the ground running, but the we seem to be following the Ostrich Strategy at the moment!

China is only leapfrogging the technological curve, nothing more, nothing less. They can start with the latest technological backbones, since there was hardly any backbone to start with as late as 5 years ago.

Add to that the fact that there are now over 330 million cell phone users in China, many of whom will only ever see the Internet over the phone. This number is expected to rise to over 1 billion cell phone users by 2009. Once again, the importance of acquiring and developing numeric domains is evident.

Yes, if the US wishes to sell its section of the internet, perhaps they should apply in writing to the Science Museum. Why not? They have quite a collection of the Apollo hardware!

While we are at the subject of broadband penetration, here are couple of good, related articles about it.

"July 22, 2005

Most U.S. broadband customers think they have a good thing going. As long as they can surf news sites and download their favorite music and games at 1-3 megabits per second, they feel as though they have entered digital Nirvana.

Compared to the old days of holding one's breath waiting for a dial-up connection, and then praying an outside call would not break it, broadband really has redefined the way people surf the Internet. It is always on, always fast and always reliable.

Broadband lets consumers do their own thing online, offering consistent communication and rapid surfing and download speeds. Whether a consumer is playing games, reading the day's news, downloading music or sending e-mail, broadband connections ensure a relatively quick and stress-free Internet experience.

Faster and constant connectivity also leads to enhanced e-commerce opportunities that will help the economy by opening new businesses and reviving old ones.

Americans may be surfing away in ignorant bliss, but there is a secret about broadband they may never discover: Their fellow Web users around the globe are enjoying broadband speeds up to 25 times faster -- at a fraction of the cost -- and government officials in Europe and Asia are pushing for even faster speeds and wider connectivity networks, intended mainly to foster economic growth.

Looking at the percentage of people with high-speed Internet access, the United States has been slipping behind other countries over the last several years, causing concern among some economists and technology experts. Ranked fourth in 2001, the United States now ranks 12th, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, with 12.8 citizens per 100 enjoying broadband access..."

Make sure your kids learn Chinese instead of French, German or even Spanish as a second language. ;)

Sounds like good advice, but strangely it is not even an option on the curriculum. If my sons inheritance, however, is largely tied up in Chinese Domains, I think he will pull out the stops to learn enough to get by!
