Chinese characters coming soon to Internet domain names

THE Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has agreed that ``.中国'', meaning China, can officially begin use as a domain name next year, Jiefang Daily reported.

The China Internet Network Information Center made the announcement on Tuesday, saying it will provide a more convenient method for netizens who only use Chinese to surf the Internet, the report said.

At the annual ICANN meeting held in Paris, its executive council reached an agreement that other languages including Chinese can be adopted as Top-Level Domain Names. The decision means non-English Domain Name suffixes will appear online besides the traditional ones in English such as ``.cn'', ``.com'', and ``.net'', the report said.

Next year Chinese enterprises can register online domain names by using complete Chinese characters that is made up of the Chinese name of the company and ``.中国''. Meanwhile, Chinese Internet users can input the Chinese characters to reach the company's Website, the report said.

Only if you have your head up your arse. This extension already resolves within China and will resolve globally from about New Year. This is interchangeable with dot CN which is now the World's second largest extension after dot Com.

First, there are more than a couple of different "input methods" for Chinese characters, and "pinyin" (as mentioned in that link) is only one of them. And I can tell you that experienced Chinese "keyboarders" can type REAL fast, esp. when they type in WORDS and PHRASES, and not individual characters (as in English, you don't type "d-o-m-a-i-n" but "domain").

Yes, they do but it not as good as it should be. The hack to get dot CN to resolve in China seems to disrupt the dot Com traffic. This problem should resolve when IDN ccTLDs go into the ICANN Root.

Outside China there is quite a bit of traffic on IDN. I get clicks into double figures per day on Russian IDNs.

Domainguru is getting a Million hits a month on one of his developed Thai IDN names.

PPC tends to be low in a lot of Asian countries, but that is largely due to the fact that Google is still building up steam. The exception is Japan where clicks tend to be more valuable than the US.

True, esp. when pinyin (using Roman characters) are so popular even among the older generation. It makes sense that names like "danwei" or "quanxi" almost IMMEDIATELY ring the bells, as if they are written in Chinese characters.

When the big rationalisation comes and names are dropping like flies, it is going to be most Namepros members that get burnt. It is the biggest example of screwed up group-think on the planet.
