Anybody watching the AWESOME CNET names that are on hold?

WOWSERS! :bandit:

I was like "HOLY SMOKES". I doubt they willever expire though, but it did make for an interesting time parsing the zone files today.

Reminded me of the good old days when that was the norm.

I had a snap on a cnet name earlier this year "mp3meta.com". It went into redemption period and somehow got renewed the day that it would have gone into pending delete. That really bit the big one...

In early 2000 many CNET domains dropped:

kids.com
welcome.com
future.com
etc..

We were lucky enough to get kids.com and welcome.com only later to find out that there was a mixup at Bulk Register and these were false registrations. The next day however the domains DID drop and were registered at many other registrars. Needless to say Network Solutions and Bulk Registrar performed and investigation after a bunch of us complained to some online news magazine's

http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,33753-2,00.html

Well, the end of the story is...Network Solutions concluded that CNET HAD paid their reg fee prior to the domains droppign and asked all of the registrars to hand over the domains back to CNET. They all complied.

Now that was then and this is now. I am sure many registrars would not comply with such a request anymore. But don't be surprised if those domains do drop and CNET cries again. Hopefully the outcome will be different though.

It was Yun Ye (No name.com/Ult Search) who had thought he got future.com, while we thought we had kids.com, welcome.com.

It looks like the domains were renewed on 7/23 and are back to active status now. Sometimes it takes a website to go down before anyone remembers to pay the registration bill!
