I haven't dealt much with vanity names since the resale values are generally low. However I have a daughter that wants to go to Duke University, so I had to snap up BlueDevil.net when it appeared on the expired list today.

That piqued my interest and in looking around for other famous college team names, I found that in virtually every case, the name is registered in all domains and in both the singular and plural forms.

Considering how many basketball national championships Duke has won, I am surprised someone let this name drop. Especially since it has some commercial value to broadcasters (the Blue Devil Network).

Do any of you have experience selling college team names like this? If so, what range do the .coms and .nets sell in?
If the value is low, considering my daughters plans (and my own nickname) I can certainly keep it and be happy.

Duke, this is the right opportunity for you to register together DevilDuke.com, and DukeDevil.com, of course ... (I do'nt know if this is available)

No, those terms don't work. It has to be the team's real nickname. They are the Blue Devils - the Blue can not be left out. That is why DukeDevil.com is available but DukeBlueDevil is not, even though it is much longer.

If you look for a true pure nickname that has not been bastardized in any way, you will find they are almost all taken.

I would start a new thread with CollegeTuitionFees.com in the Subject area Dirk so more people will see it and comment. Though its long I think it is a good name. I'm staring college tuition fees in the face here in a couple of years so that is a name I would definitely search for.

Just bear in mind that many colleges and universities vigorously protect their nicknames from domain registrations thay they view as squatting on their school trademarks.

Very good point DOD. And Blue Devils is so unique I would think it would be much easier to protect than a more generic name like Wildcats (used by both Kentucky and Arizona, among others).

Aren't the Blue Devils another one of those acrobatic aero teams, like the Red Devils?

Earl: I know there are a bundle of schools with the same nickname. And if you used it for the Foggy Valley Junior College of Mining Technology or Elmer Fudd Elementary, you would have little trouble.

But, and this is a big BUTT, if a site using BlueDevils goes up that refers to that great school in N.C., a few screen shots will be made and a UDRP complaint drafted in a flash.

That's my only point. I can register Apple.whatever; I had just better not use it for a personal computer site. Likewise, I can register Delta.whatever, but I had better not be using the domain to sell airline tickets or bathroom faucets.

DOD your point is well taken and you are quite correct. I bought it thinking primarily of reselling it as a vanity name to a Duke alumnus (of which many wealthy ones abound), or just keeping it for my daughter's use as she is interested in going to Duke when she graduates from high school.
