I recently acquired Columbia.fm Am I lucky?

Columbia has 550,000 exact searches / month @ google.

34 FM radio stations @ Columbia ( Capital of US State South Carolina ).

Keyword [Columbia] is well known, associated with a clothing company, a university, a music recording company & a doomed NASA space shuttle. It's also a Colombia typo.
adwords exact global monthly search volume = 550,000
estimated average cpc = $1.20

How many people in Micronesia are looking for Columbia (and would they call it Columbia?).

Revenue and traffic will be very low so there will be no value with that. You're also looking at very high renewal fees ($90 though Moniker, $70 though GoDaddy, $75 through NetSol) which will deter many buyers.

You'd have to develop it into a site to get any good money for the domain. My only concern would be to stay away from TMs (Columbia records, especially with the FM ccTLD which is also the popular radio frequency for public radio (FM Radio), etc..).

I must be missing something. I have seen people use Google searches when explaining the values of names in horrific extentions that aren't dotcom. I have seen it for years and I have no idea what it means. Nobody is typing in Columbia.FM, so I just don't get it.

What you and others reference time and time again has absolutely zero to do with the value of these names. You won't get any type-in traffic, so why would this name be worth anything? Do people not understand the reasoning why dotcom is king, and why Google searches might matter if you have the name or phrase in dotcom?

It is just unbelievable to see this day in and day out. It is the equivalent of looking at Manhattan real estate and trying to claim that your property in some small town has value because it is on a street named Manhattan.

99 percent of those who use Google Searches in threads are getting it all wrong. It is similar to seeing the words premium or generic in a thread. That is usually a sign that the garbage truck is about to dump some crap right in front of everyone's eyes. Those who own the great names almost never use the words premium or generic.....the names speak for themselves.

WhoDatDog... you hit the nail smack dab on the head right there.

Take it from my experience... most ccTLD's are absolutely worthless. I at one point had a LLL .fm domain name consisting of very good characters, but it didn't sell (I got rid of it), and got no traffic.

With all these new TLD's coming out (i.e. .sucks, .toronto, .football, etc.), keyword.(ccTLD) domains will become worth less and less. Dot com, net, and org have been the standard since 1985, and are the ones who will get all the traffic. If somebody saw a .fm name in an ad, they would probably think it was a typo and try the .com instead. That's because when people think website, they think .com.

Also, what Draggar said about renewal fees is very true. Holding onto a portfolio of .com domains is hard enough to maintain at $10 per year per name... try multiplying that by seven and see how much of a portfolio you can sustain.

Apart from the discussion whether the domain by itself is worth anyhting or not, it is a great domain to develop.
Take nederland.fm or belgie.fm for example, two popular sites where you can select to listen to one of the most popular radiostations in these countries (great for expats).
