.COM breaks through the 40,000,000 barrier

Today the popular gTLD .COM exceeded the mark of 40 million registered
domains. About 400,000 domains were newly registered within the last 24
hours.

.COM is the definite number one, followed by .DE with 8,893,164 domains
being registered and .NET with a bit more than 6,000,000.

Yes, I have been trailing that but there have been more than 1M domains added in the last two days. Expect it to dip back down below again in the next few days.

Longer-term though, the total number of domains registered will increase dramatically to meet worldwide demand. The level of domain usage in the US and UK far outstrips even Japan and Germany let alone the developing world. I think total domain registration will reach a 500M worldwide before there is significant stablisation.
