Hi all,
I was in Mexico City this past July, 2011, and I made a point to look around at what the domains were that were being advertised on billboards and on businesses. I don't remember seeing a single business using the .mx ccTLD. Everyone was using the .com.mx ccTLD. Also, after talking to people while in the city they also looked at me funny when I asked if they ever saw the .mx domain. They then told me "No."

It actually makes sense to me that people are gravitating towards .com.mx -- it has .com in it, and we all know how successful .com is and how much we always want to type ".com" after everything we put into a browser. It fits right in with the reflex.

I don't mean to break up the party in here or anything, I'm just sayin'. Hopefully there is more insight that I am just not privy too.

.com.mx may be more popular in Mexico... but imo .mx is far superior in resell value. Just give it time. I own a few top names in both .com.mx and .mx and I get more offers on .mx. I closed on some lll.mx at very good prices.

.com.mx is more established because it has been around since the very start while .mx was only released recently.
The fact that .com is contained in the substring has nothing to do with the success of .com.mx ;)
For instance Australians use .com.au (or .com) because .au is just not allowed :)
Other countries are in the exact same situation. For example Costa Rica has allowed second level registrations since 2008 but .co.cr still outnumber .cr

Over time the shorter version should win over.
Note that in other countries the policies and restrictions may vary between second and third level registrations.
Japan is one example of that. .jp is open to all but .co.jp is only available to local registered companies, so it's somewhat more official and more respectable.

Domainers have a hard time selling their .mx domains because they lack insight into the local market. mx isn't the norm yet as confirmed in this post :)

You see more .com.mx because they use it first before the .mx extension. I agree with BostonDomainer, that .MX will have a better chance of selling in Mexico.

I've noticed the same scenario in .com.ph Philippines extension, when I was in Philippines I see billboards using .com.ph extension, very few using .ph. Talking with other IT folks, they prefer to have .ph extension.

I am from mexico and have lived there a while, I would honestly say that the .mx is going to pick up at some point over the .com.mx, is that saying that one is better than the other? No I think its going to be a branding thing in mexico, either you own both and chose to use the .com to try and take some of the "keyword.com" search, or your go w/ the .mx to have the shorter extension.

It's like .co.in and .in, the former is more common because it's been around longer, the .in was made available later. But I'd say you see more sales action on the .in extension. Hopefully .mx will be the same.
